None of them had any unusual marks, and their communicators showed no sign of tampering.

Under the circumstances, there had been a fairly high chance of losing the True Spirit Pillar. They couldn't possibly bring it with them, since they wouldn't have been able to activate the ritual and create a teleportation passage to escape.
But if they left it behind, Sui Xi and the others wouldn't have been able to protect it if they were attacked, given their abilities.
