Each of the Hydra's heads wore a crown. Every one of them was solemn and sacred, without the savagery or sinister air snakes ought to possess. They held their heads high in pride, loftily gazing down upon all living things like gods surveying the world.

Seated upon the throne was a statue of a god wearing a crown, with six pairs of wings spreading from its back. But more than half of the statue's head had shattered away, and its body was riddled with holes and cracks. The god had four faces, facing front, back, left, and right, each bearing a completely different expression—grief, despair, sorrow, wild laughter. Every face carried an intensely infectious power, making anyone who saw it unconsciously reveal the same expression.
