At the Black Crow Gorge defensive line of the Gallic Empire, Enzo, clad in enchanted leather armor, stared grimly into the distance.
Black Crow Gorge was the main land route through the northern provinces toward Berely. The alien armies could press toward Berely through Black Crow Gorge; it was their most direct avenue of attack. If they took the water route, the Seine River had already been sealed off by the powerful fleets of the Gallic Empire and the Caesar Empire, leaving the alien fleet unable to advance even a step.
If they bypassed Black Crow Gorge by land, the alien army would not only have to detour nearly a thousand miles, but also risk advancing alone and having their retreat cut off. Though the aliens were violent and barbaric, their grasp of warfare was quite good. Unless they captured Black Crow Gorge, they would not rashly send a secondary force around it to attack Berely.
Seven days ago, Beludi, commander-in-chief of the Gallic Empire's capital army, had been gravely wounded by an alien assassin and left on the verge of death. Marshal Beian personally led a reinforcement legion to Black Crow Gorge and took over all military affairs along the defensive line.
As one of Holy Light I's favored men, Enzo led a reinforcement legion composed of fifty thousand Dragon Cavalry and three thousand cavalrymen of the Royal Forbidden Guard northward with him. As the most mobile force among the reinforcements, Enzo's large contingent had been assigned by Marshal Beian as a rapid-response rescue force, moving along the Black Crow Gorge line and ready at any moment to reinforce any section that might be breached.
