Background

Sun Zhi led Shen Lin’s constable squad beneath the Qiulin County Torture Chamber. He had gained a reputation as a capable demon slayer, having killed many monsters and drawn the attention of the provincial Demon Suppression Bureau; however, many of his subordinates died during these operations 3.

His success was built partly on secret dealings with demons. Sun Zhi supplied strong constables to the Mantis Demon as food in exchange for information and assistance locating other demons. He intended to use the deaths of Shen Lin, Kong Yu, and the rest of the squad to support a fabricated story of a difficult battle with a Tiger Demon 3 5.

After Shen Lin killed the Mantis Demon, Sun Zhi realized that Shen Lin might know his secret. Rather than confront him immediately, he returned to the County Office to assess what Shen Lin and Kong Yu knew, prepared to eliminate them if necessary 5.

Personality

Sun Zhi is calculating and survival-driven. He carefully manages evidence of his crimes, understands the risks of demon transactions, and avoids acting without a practical advantage 8 13. His willingness to abandon a surviving, mutilated subordinate and trade fellow constables as demon food establishes his ruthlessness 3 5.

Despite his outward confidence, Sun Zhi is deeply intimidated by superior strength. Shen Lin’s saber demonstration leaves him unable to resist, and after witnessing Shen Lin defeat the wolf demon, he accepts Shen Lin’s leadership rather than oppose him 9 17.

He is also opportunistic. Once he recognizes that following Shen Lin may bring rewards and advancement, he chooses cooperation even while understanding that Shen Lin is exploiting him 22 28.

Mantis Demon Conspiracy

Sun Zhi’s arrangement with the Mantis Demon is exposed indirectly after Shen Lin survives and kills her. His planned cover story collapses when Shen Lin and Kong Yu return alive with the demon’s remains 3 5.

Forced Partnership with Shen Lin

Shen Lin uses knowledge of Sun Zhi’s crimes to coerce him into finding demons and pursuing wealth together. After being threatened at saberpoint, Sun Zhi begins assisting Shen Lin rather than risk exposure or death 8 9.

Wolf Demon and Bai Family Operation

Sun Zhi leads Shen Lin to Old Master Bai and helps arrange the hunt for an allegedly injured wolf demon. The wolf demon is actually at the Opening Meridians Realm and badly injures Sun Zhi, while Shen Lin kills it and later transports Sun Zhi back to Bai Family Village 13 16 17.

Shen Lin later credits Sun Zhi with the operation’s demon kills, creating the public belief that Sun Zhi reached the Opening Meridians Realm. Sun Zhi realizes that Shen Lin has turned his reputation into a tool for concealing his own strength 21 22.

Black Wind Stronghold Infiltration

Sun Zhi infiltrates the Wu family to draw out Huang Xiaotian while Shen Lin and Zijing move separately. Huang Xiaotian discovers Sun Zhi’s false cultivation claim, has him beaten, and tortures him for information on Shen Lin. To survive, Sun Zhi reveals Shen Lin’s strength and identity 39 40.

Shen Lin ultimately defeats the dog demons, but places the credit on Sun Zhi again. The resulting fame leaves Sun Zhi fearful that Black Wind Stronghold and other demons will regard him as their enemy 42 43.
