Ch. 1341A Chance Encounter
Chapter Summary: “A Chance Encounter”
Plot and key events
Jiang Yan is dining in a small city when he secretly uses his divine abilities to observe a mysterious woman in green. She notices his scrutiny and creates an invisible barrier around the restaurant, confronting him in a realm hidden from ordinary people. The woman, Xiao Qing, warns that spying on others is offensive and says her uncontrollable power, Heavenly Heart, might have attacked him if it had sensed hostility.
Jiang Yan apologizes and explains that he was only being cautious because two powerful divine ability wielders meeting in such a city was unusual. Xiao Qing accepts his explanation but warns him that her master taught her to destroy or restrain anyone who probes her. Jiang Yan agrees with the principle and advises her to remain suspicious of everyone.
To demonstrate his point, Jiang Yan secretly places a powerful effect in her wine. Xiao Qing’s body briefly reacts as though it contains an exploding star, but her white sword suppresses the danger. Jiang Yan reveals it was only a harmless lesson and emphasizes that trusting appearances can be dangerous. Xiao Qing recognizes the wisdom in his warning and thanks him.
The two introduce themselves: Jiang Yan reveals he is an elder of the Yu Long Sect, while the woman identifies herself as Xiao Qing. She correctly realizes that Jiang Yan is more interested in learning about her master and the origins of her extraordinary white longsword than in her name. Refusing to reveal more, she returns to her table after her food arrives.
After Xiao Qing leaves him, Jiang Yan reflects on his journey. He plans to make this city his final stop before returning to the Vermilion Bird Holy Land, where he hopes the Vermilion Bird Holy Master can suppress the trouble within him. He also intends to warn the Vermilion Bird about an ancient, dangerous figure hiding in the southern human territories. As Jiang Yan prepares to leave, someone abruptly asks whether Xiao Qing might be unable to pay for her meal, ending the chapter on a comic cliffhanger.
Character development
- Jiang Yan is shown as cautious, perceptive, and playful. Although he initially spies on Xiao Qing, he does not act with malice and uses the wine incident to teach her a practical lesson about deception and trust. His thoughts also reveal his broader concerns about his internal affliction, the Demon Race lands, and the ancient monster he encountered.
- Xiao Qing appears powerful but inexperienced in worldly matters, likely because she has spent much of her life in seclusion. She is proud, direct, and initially suspicious, yet she is capable of recognizing good advice. Jiang Yan’s prank makes her more aware of the dangers of trusting others too easily. Her refusal to discuss her master or sword also shows growing cleverness and discretion.
- Heavenly Heart and the white sword are presented as powerful protective forces linked to Xiao Qing. Heavenly Heart may react independently to perceived hostility, while the sword can suppress extraordinary internal threats.
Significant themes
- Trust and suspicion: Even apparently harmless people may conceal dangerous abilities or intentions.
- Experience versus cultivation: Xiao Qing possesses great power but lacks Jiang Yan’s worldly experience, making practical wisdom as important as strength.
- The value of restraint and secrecy: Jiang Yan advises Xiao Qing to keep secrets and avoid judging others solely by their outward behavior.
- Chance encounters and fate: Their meeting is brief and possibly fated, but both acknowledge that their connection may end after this single encounter.
- Foreshadowing: Jiang Yan’s plans to visit the Vermilion Bird Holy Land and warn it about an ancient hidden figure suggest future conflicts involving his condition, the Demon Race, and powerful elders.
Character interactions
Jiang Yan and Xiao Qing’s conversation shifts from confrontation to mutual respect. Their exchange is marked by verbal testing, playful deception, and cautious trust. Xiao Qing’s refusal to disclose her origins preserves the mystery surrounding her master and sword, while Jiang Yan’s demonstration forces her to recognize the dangers of naïveté.
