"Where was Academician Ankalev?"

Reilo asked.

At his words, the female scholar's face darkened.

"Master, please come with me."

With a puzzled look, Reilo followed the female scholar toward the giant furnace hanging upside down in the center of the hall.

Up close, the energy reactions inside the furnace seemed to involve more than just Radiation Force. There was something else, too.

Suddenly, Thunder Power exploded across the furnace wall, and the aged figure of Ankalev appeared. He had manifested as an elemental being.

Reilo stared in astonishment.

"Is this one of your doubles, Master?"

The old man made of thunder gave a bitter smile.

"No. This is my last resort for staying alive. From now on, I'll never be able to leave this furnace."

"Huh?"

Reilo's expression turned grave. "Do you mean that after your body suffered irreparable damage, you used this furnace to become something like the beings created through Elemental Rebirth in the Xilan Duchy?"

"More or less, though there are some differences."

Ankalev said, "Those powerful beings created through Elemental Rebirth can only remain dormant most of the time, and every time they're summoned, they lose some of their life force. But I'm alive and conscious at all times. The moment the furnace goes out, though, my life will come to a complete end."

At that, Reilo seemed to remember something. A strange look crossed his face.

Drawing a deep breath, Reilo said slowly, "Your wisdom truly is beyond the reach of ordinary people, Master."
