"The general plan is to use some kind of spell to limit the possibility of living people becoming ghosts after they die." Gu Mo cut straight to the point.
I listened carefully and thought it over. But with what little I knew, I had no idea how a spell could accomplish something like that.
After death, a person's soul would linger in the human world for a while. Once its consciousness returned, it would set off down one of several different paths.
It was much the same as life. Between birth, aging, sickness, and death lay all the little things that made up each person's life. Every thought and every decision led to a different life. The same was true of souls. From the moment they became conscious to the actions they took, and finally whether they became ghosts, entered the underworld to be reincarnated, or lost their way in the human world and became trapped there, unable to move forward or back, every soul had its own unique experience. Outsiders could interfere to some extent, but no one could forcibly plan out another person's entire life. Nor could anyone force a soul to enter the underworld the moment it came into being.
It wasn't that I doubted the abilities of people in the supernatural world. It was a matter of scale.
How small was the supernatural community? And how many people were there in the world? How many people died every day? Of those who died, how many were in hospitals, waiting to die after receiving a terminal prognosis, and how many died suddenly in accidents?
How could people in the supernatural community monitor all of that? And how could they possibly have enough people to send every newly dead person, every newly formed soul, into the underworld?
