"You're moving out over something this trivial? Over a toy? Over five hundred yuan?!"
The accusation echoed through the room, deafening.
Wang Yan sat at the dining table, saying nothing.
"Fine, fine, look at you, all grown up! You've got money now! Your wings are strong enough for you to move out on your own! Why don't you just stop caring about us altogether? We raised you all these years, and we're not worth as much as a toy, is that it? Not worth as much as five hundred yuan!" Wang Yan's mother was beside herself with rage.
Her father sat beside her, his face just as livid.
Wang Yan said calmly, "Mom, do you really think I'm that greedy? I'm the one paying off the mortgage on this place. I paid the down payment, too, and I give you money every month for household expenses. When I was in college and got scholarships, didn't I buy things for you and Dad and take you out to eat? Every year on your birthdays, didn't I host a dinner and invite all our relatives?"
"Oh! So now you're keeping score with us, is that it? Do you have any idea how much we spent on you from the time you were little?" Wang Yan's mother's voice grew shrill. "You were the one who wanted to buy a house! We lived in the old place for all those years. What was wrong with it? You just had to buy a place, had to!"
"It took an hour on the subway to get from the old place to my office, and I had to transfer. From here, it's only three stops. I told you back then, if you didn't want to move, I could buy a small one-bedroom apartment around here for myself.
