I slowly followed him and heard the sound of a toy up ahead again.

With a sharp crack, the sound abruptly stopped. The young man had apparently smashed the toy by force.
I followed from a distance, without risking a closer look. Just listening to the sounds was enough to tell that the same thing had happened several times.
No matter how the young man acted or how forcefully he destroyed the toy, it would reappear, whole again.

The young man seemed to have changed his approach. He stopped fighting the toy and let it follow him.

The buildings beside it looked like other government offices. Their floor plans, remaining decorations, and furniture were all different from those in ordinary homes.
After circling around for a while, the young man seemed tired. He found a dry fountain in the town center and sat on its stone edge.
