"Mm... You're... you..." The woman looked around, then slowly got to her feet, still dazed.
The girl's eyes widened at the sight, and delight gradually spread across her face. She rushed forward, trying to hug the woman.
"Mom!" Her joyful cry reached my ears.
The woman turned toward the sound, but her gaze landed on the squad of SWAT officers.
The girl passed right through her. She fell to her knees, at a loss.
"Wenwen..." The woman soon noticed the girl's body lying on the ground. With a trembling cry, she scooped it into her arms. Her mouth hung open, but not a sound came out. She was utterly panic-stricken and had no idea what had happened.
The girl's ghost turned to look at the scene. Tears streamed down her face as she covered it with her hands and knelt on the ground, sobbing quietly.
I looked at the SWAT officers and Chen Yihan. They could clearly see the girl's ghost.
Only her mother couldn't see a thing.
Several of the SWAT officers were still in shock, so I could only gesture to the calm-looking captain.
The captain quickly came to his senses. He struck the grieving mother, knocking her unconscious, then carried her into the room next door.
I looked at the girl. "Wenwen, see? I can help you, right? I can save your mom, and I can save you, too." I cupped her face so she could look at me. "Wenwen, tell me what happened. Your dad said you wanted an apple..."
The girl let out a wounded sob. "I wanted an apple... I... I just... I don't know why. I picked up the knife... I killed Mom. I killed Mom... Waaah... Mom... Mom!"
