Chen Yihan stood up beside the bed and looked at the three people who had come in.
The two men in suits didn't say anything or introduce themselves.
I nodded to the old leader and saw his helpless, wry smile.
"Xiao Lin, Lin Qi..." The old leader spoke first. "You should have heard some of the current situation from Director Chen. Things really aren't looking good. As for what's happening now... We'd just arrived at the entrance when we got word that two more people had been burned to death. It was much like what happened to Xu Tiancheng, the man upstairs from you. The investigation team hasn't arrived yet, but..."
The old leader had always seemed kind and wise, but now he looked weary, like an old man.
"It's the same incident," I confirmed.
He didn't react much, but one of the two men in black suits frowned.
"I thought so, too. The person who called the police said they first heard a radio suddenly repeating yesterday's report about the fire. Then a ghost appeared, and it and a woman burst into flames together..." The old leader sighed. Halfway through, he seemed to grow tired and lowered himself into a chair, holding onto it for support. "They just burst into flames. Fire extinguishers didn't work, and neither did the firefighters when they arrived... They didn't struggle at all. They just stood there... Someone filmed the whole thing on a phone and posted it online."
I listened quietly. My numb heart felt nothing. I didn't know how to respond to this.
They could say they'd died because of me.
Before, I could comfort myself with the thought that if I changed the whole world, everything could be fixed. The dead could come back, and these tragedies would never have happened.
