The change startled me, but what surprised me more was Zhuang Huai and Lü Qiaolan's reaction.

Lü Qiaolan screamed and stumbled back several steps.

I turned to look at the backpack on Lü Qiaolan's shoulders. It was quiet inside; neither of the two teddy bears had come out.

The fight over there was still going on. The old man wasn't completely defenseless. He tore the teddy bear off his face and flung it onto the table. It bounced twice, then pounced on him again.

In the scuffle, the drawer was pulled onto the floor, scattering its contents everywhere.

My sharp eyes caught a glint.

I didn't have time to think. While the teddy bear had the old man pinned down, I lunged straight for the mirror, yanked the amulet from around my neck, and pressed it against the glass.

The mirror shattered, and tiny fragments flew out, striking my cheek with a sharp sting.

My hands, pressed against the mirror, hurt even more. One burned as if exposed to searing heat; the other felt as though it had been sliced in half, blood streaming from it.
