The Guide was decisive, too. He reached straight into his pocket, pulled something out, and threw it at the monster.

I had no idea what it was. I only saw it flare with a blinding light in front of the monster.

The Guide had already turned his head, catching the light only out of the corner of his eye. But my vision had gone completely white. I could only feel him still running, with the monster's furious roar behind us.

When my vision returned, I found myself hiding inside an unfinished building. More precisely, in its stairwell.

There were no windows in the stairwell, just a square opening.

Judging by the dust on the ground, the place had been abandoned for a long time.

I guessed the Guide was still in that construction area, or rather, inside one of the unfinished buildings there.

He was crouched by a corner, hunched over and covering his mouth and nose, forcing his heartbeat and breathing to slow.

I heard panting outside. It didn't sound human. It might have been the monster.

There was also a rustling sound, as though something was scraping against something else. I couldn't make out what it was.

After a while, the sounds faded into the distance.

I let out a breath of relief. Even though I knew this was a dream, and that I was witnessing the Guide's past, I couldn't help being affected by his mood. I was terribly tense.

The Guide lowered his hand and steadied his breathing.

Suddenly, a claw struck the square opening.

Sharp claws and coarse, stiff fur were right beside the Guide's cheek.

The Guide held his breath almost instantly and slowly shifted away from the opening.

Crack...

The concrete crumbled underfoot, leaving a clear mark.

For a moment, I felt dazed.
