He'd just said he was looking forward to Grandma Five's cooking, but the next moment, Yu Chuanfeng couldn't understand where all this awful food had come from.
Zheng Wei's family wasn't stuffing themselves. They didn't exactly look like they were enjoying the food, but they ate naturally enough.
"Is it not good? Is it not to your taste?" Zheng Wei's mother, the old woman, asked with concern.
Yu Chuanfeng hesitated, then shook his head. When he saw that the whole family was watching him, he forced himself to take a couple of bites.
"I went to the seafood market today. I thought you kids would like this. If you don't like seafood, I'll make something else tomorrow," the old woman said gently.
"I want pork chops!" Zheng Wei's son piped up at once.
Zheng Wei scolded him.
The old woman smiled. "All right, all right. I'll fry you some pork chops tomorrow."
"The kids will eat shrimp at most. They find crab too much trouble," Zheng Wei said.
"Ah, then next time I'll make crab-and-tofu soup and pick the meat out..."
"Mom, don't go to all that trouble. If we want to eat it, we can go to a restaurant sometime. It's such a hassle to make at home," Zheng Wei's wife said.
"What's the hassle? We used to make crab soup dumplings at the restaurant. We picked the crab meat out just like that." The old woman was still smiling.
Yu Chuanfeng lowered his head. He still moved his chopsticks slowly, and swallowed just as slowly, but I could feel that his mood had changed.
Maybe he wasn't used to seafood. Maybe the seafood wasn't fresh.
Yu Chuanfeng's mind wandered, and he thought of all the snacks the old woman was good at making: little steamed buns, zongzi, soup
