The straight-line distance from New York to Los Angeles was over four thousand kilometers. By road, it was definitely farther, and even driving would take several days, since they had to rest along the way.
Fortunately, both Old Wang and Skye had driver's licenses, so they could take turns driving.
They could bicker and chat nonsense along the way, or do some exercise beneficial to body and mind, like practicing martial arts... If your mind went somewhere else, go stand facing the wall and reflect.
Of course, Old Wang spent most of his time playing games.
In his previous life, Old Wang had been a Grandmaster Monk. Although he had been Chen Stormstout's disciple, the student had surpassed the master. His strength far exceeded Shaohao, the last Pandaren emperor. How could Chen Stormstout or the Vomiting Blood Sect Leader compare?
Cultivation did not require his full attention. Old Wang had actually been cultivating all along; he could do it lying down, sprawled out, or sitting. Gaming was merely something he did on the side.
Until he recovered his Golden Finger, this was all he could do.
"Huh? Besides you, someone else wants to buy the Heart of Azeroth. They've even already gotten in touch! This guy is called 'Robbie Reyes,' and he's a worker at an auto repair shop... Why does he want to buy your crappy necklace?"
Before setting out, Skye had hacked Peter of the Fifth Street Gang's phone and computer with her phone, and incidentally tapped his calls. It was proving useful now.
"Normal. It's a Golden Finger. Who wouldn't want one? Who wouldn't want to be the protagonist?" Old Wang did not even look up as he continued gaming.
He was in no hurry.
The Heart of Azeroth contained the powers bestowed by Azeroth, Aman'Thul, Norgannon, Aggramar, Argus... and a whole host of Titans. It was bound to his soul, and only he could use it. If anyone else got it, it was really just an ordinary necklace. They could not become the protagonist, only spectators.
Robbie Reyes?
The name sounded somewhat familiar, as though he had heard it somewhere before.
"Robbie offered ten thousand dollars. Peter wanted a hundred thousand. Robbie bargained... They've reached an agreement: fifty thousand dollars, transaction in two hours."
Skye panicked. She turned to Old Wang, her beautiful big eyes blinking. "Wang, think of something! We still need at least a full day to reach Los Angeles! If we don't make it in time, we'll have to go find that Robbie again!"
"What's so hard about that? Offer a hundred thousand. Make the transaction tomorrow night." Old Wang remained perfectly calm.
"Okay." Skye hurriedly made the call to get in touch.
At an auto repair shop somewhere in Los Angeles.
Robbie finished repairing a car, and flames suddenly rose in his eyes.
The flames of vengeance reddened his eyes and blinded his heart.
The Fifth Street Gang had actually attacked him and his younger brother for no reason at all!
If Hellfire, that motorcycle rider, had not appeared and given him the Spirit of Vengeance, he would have died long ago.
His younger brother's legs were broken, and he could only rely on a wheelchair now.
He was still so young, only in middle school. What would happen to him in the future?
"After negotiating for half a month, I've finally reached an agreement with the Spirit of Vengeance. Tonight is the time for vengeance!"
Robbie took out his phone and opened Peter of the Fifth Street Gang's page. There was a picture on it: an obviously beautiful necklace.
This was the best opportunity.
"There's still one hour until the transaction. Time to go." Robbie drove the Dodge Charger left behind by his uncle Eli to the meeting place.
He waited for an hour.
No one came.
He waited another hour.
Still no one.
He waited an entire night.
Where was he?
Los Angeles was quite beautiful.
Although it was only 2008, this was Earth in the Marvel World, not Earth from his life before the previous one. Its technology was considerably more advanced than that of 2018 Earth, at the very least. An intelligent butler like J.A.R.V.I.S. could not be made on 2018 Earth.
Skyscrapers stood row upon row.
The lights blazed brightly in this city that never slept.
Where there was light, there was darkness, such as the Fifth Street Gang.
The largest gang in Los Angeles was actually the Chinese Gang. Compared to them, the Fifth Street Gang was nothing, but it still had dozens of members, all armed with guns. They dealt drugs and trafficked flesh, and as long as the price was high enough, they also accepted contracts to kill.
Peter sat in the car, humming a little tune, as comfortable as could be.
Half a month ago, he had taken a job to kill a scientist named Eli for a full one million dollars!
That was no small sum, and the job was not difficult. He had immediately brought a group of men to stake the place out by car.
That night, Eli's car drove out. His brothers caught up and fired a few shots. The car exploded.
He had thought the million was theirs, only to discover that Eli was still alive. The ones driving out that night had been his two nephews!
That was nothing. The Fifth Street Gang valued its reputation. If they failed once, they would try again.
Who would have thought Eli would go to prison?
That was still nothing. They had killed people, and even if there was no credit, there was still hard work. He immediately brought his men to demand payment.
Even if they would not pay one million, they had to give him a hundred thousand... no, ninety-nine thousand as a labor fee, right?
The Fifth Street Gang repaid every debt... no, collected every debt!
In the end, that client named Joseph had been hospitalized. He was unconscious, like a vegetable, and could not even communicate.
A week ago, while in a bad mood, Peter had taught a little punk a lesson and unexpectedly gotten hold of something good.
He lowered his head to look at the necklace around his neck, especially that golden pendant... The gem inside was brilliant like a starry sky, beautiful and captivating. It looked great, and more importantly, it was valuable.
He posted a picture online to show it off, and someone offered a hundred thousand dollars to buy it.
He had demanded one million from the start. The other party haggled for a full hour, bargaining him down to one hundred twenty thousand, two hundred and twenty-three.
It was the first time in his life he had met someone so good at bargaining!
"We're here!"
Peter parked and gave a look. The other car following them drove around to somewhere out of sight.
There was something suspicious about this. How could a necklace made of neither gold nor platinum sell for so much?
That gem was beautiful, but it was too beautiful. It did not seem real; it looked more artificial, and not valuable.
Maybe it was a trap laid by an enemy to take the chance to kill him.
He was not stupid. He had brought more than a dozen subordinates. There were a few in this car and over a dozen in the truck behind them. Everyone had guns, and they even had an RPG bought at a high price. Even if the Chinese Gang came, they would not be afraid.
"Boss, they're here."
The underling driving reminded him.
Peter looked up and saw a truck stop not far away. It was broken-down and old; he would not even take it if someone sold it to him for a thousand dollars.
Could someone driving such a crappy vehicle really produce one hundred twenty thousand... and two hundred twenty-three dollars?
"Stay sharp, all of you. Be careful!" Peter picked up his pistol, disengaged the safety, and revealed a vicious smile.
Something was wrong here. It really was a trap.
But it did not matter. He was not someone to be messed with, either.
Anyone who dared scheme against the Fifth Street Gang died!
