It was as if it had sensed Jiang Cheng's thoughts. The space on the left side of the corridor grew increasingly strange. The light overhead crackled like an old man on his deathbed, whimpering helplessly.
At the entrances to several rooms, shoes had been neatly arranged.

But as Jiang Cheng approached, it was as if he had triggered some kind of prohibition. The previously silent rooms all began making strange noises at once, as though someone were scrambling toward the doors.
This was bad. They had spotted him. He had known the escape would be dangerous, but things had gone wrong much sooner than expected. Jiang Cheng's heart sank. He had planned to escape through the staff passage at the far left, but now that was no longer an option.
Worse still, he heard noises coming from behind him, too.

The thumps came one after another, drawing rapidly closer. The pressure was suffocating.
As he ran, Jiang Cheng glanced over his shoulder. His brow twitched.

But Lin Wan'er was no longer anything like the person he knew. Her hair hung loose and wild, her face tinged a ghastly green, her expression hideous. With both arms held straight out, she hopped toward him, closing the distance fast.
Her movements looked clumsy, but she was incredibly fast—even faster than he was running.
There was no way he could reach the staff passage on the far left in time. And even putting the other ghosts aside, he was no match for Lin Wan'er. She would surely catch him on the way.
