Everyone hurried as fast as they could and finally reached Mr. Wu's grave before dawn. When they arrived, the sight before them made them draw in sharp breaths. The gravestone had been knocked over, and the paper figures, incense, candles, and offerings had been trampled into a mess. Most terrifying of all, the hard tomb had been dug open, revealing a gaping black hole.
The edges of the hole bulged outward. In other words... it had been dug from the inside out. Judging by the traces left at the scene, only Mr. Wu's corpse could have done it.
Luo Tianhe crouched and picked up a brick from the chaos. After shaking off the dirt, he saw that it was blue-green and relatively fine-grained.
"Is there something wrong with this brick...?" Ding Zhenzong looked at the dark hole, then at the brick in Luo Tianhe's hand. A faint unease rose in his heart.
"It's a tomb brick, taken from an ancient tomb. These bricks are extremely sturdy, and when this grave was built, they poured a layer of glutinous rice juice over them." As he spoke, Luo Tianhe lightly rapped his knuckles against the brick. Sure enough, it made a dull sound.
"But even so, the grave was still dug open, and most of these bricks are broken." Li Bai stared at the ground, where fragments of brick lay scattered about.
Faced with the scene before them, Second Young Master and his group seemed prepared. They immediately called for help. Some people started moving bricks, others cleaned up the site, and a few took incense, candles, and offerings from the shoulder poles they had brought.
After a flurry of activity, they finally put Mr. Wu's corpse back in the grave.
"Buried" wasn't quite the right word; "shoved back in" was closer.
