Liu Hui didn't seem to mind, either. She nodded and said, "All right."
She handed the strange infant to a limping Deep Red member, and the group started toward a wall in the distance. The other Deep Red members and the researchers followed, the crowd moving in a steady stream like they were relocating.
Liu Hui stopped in front of the wall. About two meters above the ground hung a pendulum clock, an old-fashioned kind with a metal casing.
Dust covered the clock. Clearly, no one had touched it in a long time.
Liu Hui climbed onto a wooden crate on the ground and reached up to stop the clock. As soon as the pendulum stopped, she jumped down and stepped back. About ten seconds later, a rumbling sound suddenly rang out, like some enormous, ancient machine starting up.
The concrete wall in front of them began to shake, then split down the middle. Behind it was a spacious area enclosed by a retractable metal frame.
Jiang Cheng took a look. It seemed to be a huge elevator, large enough to hold dozens of people. It looked very old, at least twenty years old.
"This was an emergency exit built when this place was designed. This elevator goes straight to the Welfare Home's basement level, where there's an equipment room. Nothing has ever been stored there." Liu Hui opened the outermost metal gate and let all the Deep Red members and test subjects board first, followed by Jiang Cheng and the other two.
But as the last person, the Fatty, stepped into the elevator, the metal gate suddenly slid shut, trapping Jiang Cheng and the others inside.
The Fatty jumped in fright and turned to stare at Liu Hui outside the gate in disbelief. She stood with the researchers, her
