The procession swayed and shuffled forward at a leisurely pace. At first, all three were on edge; the scene was genuinely terrifying. But after walking for quite a while, nothing out of the ordinary happened.
"W-we just need to follow the procession to the bridge? We don't have to do anything along the way?"
Li Bai wasn't there, so Huang Jun had no choice but to ask Yao Shunyu. Of the three, Yao Shunyu was the only one he thought he could rely on. He'd taken part in the previous night's mission, where several people had died, and only he and Li Bai had survived.
Yao Shunyu was getting irritated. He had no patience for such a pointless question. Then, without warning, things changed.
Suddenly, the procession came to a halt. The crowd following the grand sedan began to retreat, and moments later a small patch of open ground had appeared in front of Zhusheng Niangniang and the village chief.
The unexpected change put all three of them on alert. Huang Jun's hopeful imaginings shattered, too, as he saw several fierce-looking people escorting someone toward them.
The person being brought over wore a short, side-fastening jacket and looked disheveled. Her hands were bound behind her back, though only symbolically. A fake beard had been painted on her face, but it was still clear she was a woman. She seemed to have dressed this way on purpose.
When she reached Zhusheng Niangniang, someone kicked the back of her knee. The woman in men's clothes immediately fell to her knees before the sedan, trembling all over.
"Who is the person below?" The village chief stopped fingering his prayer beads, his frightening, hollow eye sockets staring down at her.
The person below kowtowed frantically. "This humble man is Huang Qi. I beg the
