"Bam!"
A sudden crash exploded outside. A door had been thrown open, very close to their room. Tang Qisheng's eyes widened in alarm.
"Hm? Why isn't anyone here? I could clearly smell a living person." Amid the sounds of rummaging, one of the doctors from earlier spoke in a hollow voice.
Tang Qisheng immediately understood. The footsteps Zhu Jie had said were off had been missing one person. That person had been hiding in the hallway outside, waiting for them to walk right into a trap.
Fortunately, Zhu Jie was observant. Otherwise, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
"Thud, thud, thud."
The footsteps came closer. The doctors who had pretended to leave returned. "Well? I told you—you were imagining things. Who could there be at this hour? The last batch of patients was already sent to the cadaver room."
"But I definitely smelled someone. Strange..."
The doctor still didn't seem ready to give up. Two more crashes rang out as two more doors were thrown open, just one wall away from the room where Tang Qisheng and Zhu Jie were hiding.
At last, the footsteps stopped outside their door. Tang Qisheng stepped in front of Zhu Jie, unable to keep his breathing under control. Though he knew it would do little good, this was all he could do. He couldn't help sighing inwardly. In the end, he hadn't saved Jiang Cheng or Wang Fugui. He had failed to live up to their hopes.
Just as he prepared to fight to the death, a rustling sound suddenly came from the far end of the hallway, like the countless legs of a giant centipede scraping against the walls all at once.
"Damn it! It's the director!" one of the doctors outside cried in alarm.
"Hide! Get... get back to the office!"
