"It was raining that night," the woman said. "The rain was pouring down, and even with an umbrella, half my body got soaked."
"But when I folded up my umbrella and rushed to the entrance of Building C, I realized the door was locked with two very thick chains."
Zhou Taifu's expression shifted slightly at that. He turned as if to say something to Yu Wen, but she didn't even look at him.
"I was in a real panic. I'd only just arrived, and I didn't have any close friends yet, so I felt awkward asking another teacher if I could stay with them."
"Maybe I couldn't accept it, but I went up and pushed on the door, thinking that perhaps the security staff had been careless and hadn't locked it after all."
As she spoke, the woman's expression suddenly turned strange.
Yu Wen stopped writing and gazed at her impassively. "So that 'perhaps' really did happen."
After a long pause, the woman nodded. "That's right. Both locks were open, as if someone had put them there just for show."
"But all I could think about was getting my key so I wouldn't have to bother anyone else. I didn't give it another thought and hurried straight to the office."
"Which floor was the office on?" Yu Wen looked up.
"The third floor," the woman added. "Room 304."
Yu Wen picked up her pen and noted it down.
This might be an important detail.
"The whole building was incredibly quiet. Every classroom was pitch-black. Only a few emergency lights glowed faintly at the far end of the corridor. It was enough to make your skin crawl."
Zhou Taifu listened intently, already putting himself back in that rainy night. Whenever the woman mentioned something eerie, he tensed up along with her.
