Second floor, Jiang Cheng had been there yesterday, matching the girl's statement.
The boy's and girl's bedrooms were easy to distinguish. One was filled with all sorts of dolls, while the other had posters of various military weapons on the walls and military magazines on the desk, exuding a strong military fan vibe.
Next, both groups turned their gaze to Jiang Cheng and the girl.
"It seems this family had a fierce argument. We found many broken plates and cups in the trash, some with bloodstains," Jiang Cheng said.
The girl added, "There are also some marks on the wooden stair railing. We analyzed them as possible fingernail scratches."
This was a clue that couldn't be ignored. The group went to the stairs and, following the girl's finger, indeed found some marks left by friction.
The strong man went up and touched it, his expression changing slightly. "That's right, they're scratches."
A family of four, a poor family atmosphere, broken tableware, scratches, and a possibly imprisoned young girl.
No matter how you pieced it together, it sounded like a family tragedy.
There was once a severely abused girl here.
"What do we need to do next?" the male clerk mumbled, "Rescue this poor girl?"
"Whatever happened here belongs to the past. We are powerless to change the past," the woman with a mole on her lip said. "All we can do is find the truth and then end the mission."
"But haven't we already deduced the truth?"
The strong man grew impatient. "Deduce my ass! How was the girl abused, who was involved in the abuse, is the girl alive or dead? We don't know any of this, so how can we end the mission!"
Startled by the strong man's shout, the male clerk dared not make a sound.
The girl looked at the male clerk with pity in her eyes.
Grumble.
Grumble.
Everyone looked towards the source of the sound. Fatty covered his stomach sheepishly. "Uh..."
"Forget it. We've searched the first floor pretty much. Let's get ready to eat," the strong man, having been busy all morning, also felt a bit hungry.
Just as everyone was preparing to cook, a voice came from behind. "That place hasn't been checked yet." Jiang Cheng pointed to the bathroom where the middle-aged man's corpse was. "I think there might be clues there."
Hearing this, everyone's expression turned solemn. Everyone knew what Jiang Cheng was thinking, but it was difficult to convince themselves to check.
After all, someone had already died there. One might trigger the taboo that led to death by entering the bathroom.
When assigning search areas, everyone tacitly avoided that place.
Ultimately, reason triumphed over fear. The strong man took a deep breath and said, "He's right. There are likely clues hidden there. Although there's some risk, if we don't solve the mission, we'll all die."
The woman with a mole on her lip, unusually, did not retort. She clearly understood the stakes, but still said sarcastically, "Then who's going?"
At this moment, Jiang Cheng interjected, "Who has been in the first-floor bathroom? Just entering counts."
Everyone raised their hands.
After counting, Jiang Cheng continued, "Then everyone might have triggered the death taboo. So this isn't just about finding clues, it's also about saving your own lives."
The girl frowned and asked, "We can't all go in together, can we?"
The strong man rubbed the stubble on his chin and nodded. "The space inside is too small. If too many people go in and something happens, we won't be able to move freely."
"That's right," Jiang Cheng nodded. "I estimate two people will be enough."
"Then who volunteers?" the male clerk, who was at the back, said excitedly.
Silence fell upon the crowd.
"Alright, let's draw lots. That way, it's fair to everyone," Jiang Cheng spread his hands.
"Okay!"
"I agree."
After some preparation, Jiang Cheng took out several pieces of paper. Two of them were shorter. He then rolled them into small scrolls in front of everyone and placed them in his palm one by one. "Those who draw the short straws go in. Any problem?"
"This method is definitely fine, but..." Fatty stared at the small scrolls in Jiang Cheng's hand and swallowed. "Why are there only 5 scrolls? There are 6 people now."
The others also noticed this problem and looked at Jiang Cheng in confusion.
"Because I'm not drawing," Jiang Cheng said naturally.
Everyone was stunned, then became angry. The strong man shouted, "Why aren't you drawing?"
"Because I haven't been to the bathroom."
"You've been here for a day and a night, and you drank so much water, how could you not have gone to the bathroom?" the male clerk, as if finding an outlet for his frustration, yelled hysterically, "You're just trying to cheat! Just let him go in alone!!"
The woman with a mole on her lip stared at Jiang Cheng with a displeased expression and sneered, "Playing tricks here comes with a price."
"I know," Jiang Cheng said with a calm expression. "But I really haven't been to the bathroom. I have proof."
He raised his hand and pointed in a direction, presumably towards the windowsill. A gust of wind blew at that moment, lifting a corner of the curtain and revealing two mineral water bottles placed behind it.
One was full, and the other was only half full. Both had a pale yellow color that was definitely not the color of normal mineral water.
They shimmered enticingly in the morning light.
"This is..." the male clerk's eyes widened abruptly.
"Mhm," Jiang Cheng nodded, admitting their guess with a hint of embarrassment. "I thought the bathroom was darker, so I..."
The Strong man looked at Jiang Cheng with a complicated expression.
Then the woman:
The Male clerk:
The girl:
The Fatty: "...You're really a little genius!"
Since Jiang Cheng hadn't entered the bathroom, no one could say much. The remaining five drew lots, and Jiang Cheng craned his neck to watch.
Finally, the Strong man and the Male clerk were luckily chosen.
When the two pulled open the bathroom door, they discovered that the Middle-aged man's body was gone.
The bathroom wasn't large; it couldn't possibly hide an adult's body.
"This isn't the world we're from," the woman behind them suddenly said. "It's normal for incomprehensible things to happen. Just get used to it."
Just as she said, the Strong man showed no surprise on his face. It was just tough luck for the Male clerk, who whined and clung to the doorway, only to be kicked inside by the Strong man.
The rest of them waited outside.
The search was very efficient. In less than five minutes, the two came out, the Strong man holding a piece of white toilet paper.
After closing the bathroom door, everyone walked to the living room. The Strong man unfolded the toilet paper, revealing a lock of hair.
"I found it in the bathtub in the bathroom. It wasn't there yesterday."
The Strong man was very cautious, not even touching the hair with his hands.
The hair was long; it should belong to a woman.
