An Explanation

Jiang Cheng couldn't help freezing when he saw the question. He'd only said it offhandedly, but now figuring out how to explain it to Lin Muwan had become a problem.

If he told her the truth, he'd have to say there was a ghost hidden in his shadow—no, not hidden in his shadow. More accurately, Wu had replaced his shadow.

But however he put it, he and her brother were different. He worried Lin Muwan might misunderstand.

Yet he didn't want to make up an excuse and deceive her.

"This is a little complicated to explain." Jiang Cheng hesitated. "I'll tell you properly when I have time."

Lin Muwan followed beside him and wrote in her notebook: "Okay."

"We'll keep going down the stairs. If we find anything wrong along the way, we'll take another route," Jiang Cheng said. "There's no telling whether we'll find your brother if we go looking for him now, and it could be dangerous. Do you understand?"

"I do." A single character appeared in the notebook.

Before he'd finished speaking, footsteps came from above. They were very light, with a hesitant quality to them. More intriguingly, as soon as Jiang Cheng noticed the strange footsteps, they stopped.

It was as if someone else was walking downstairs in the same way, but had heard the two of them and stopped at once.

Lin Muwan's gaze shifted. She raised her notebook and quickly wrote: "Could it be my brother?"

Jiang Cheng frowned slightly. The next second, he took Lin Muwan by the hand and ran downstairs. He made no effort to hide the sound of their footsteps, so whoever was hiding upstairs would surely hear them.

But after they'd run only a few steps, Lin Muwan's face, still clouded with confusion, turned deathly pale. She heard the
