Background and History

Wu Yingying was the Wu family’s eldest daughter. Investigators learned that she had been thrown into the Crossing River and that one of her bones remained in the Wu Family Mansion. They suspected that people of the Yin-Yang path had lured her into a supposed elopement with the scholar Lu Jianli, who was actually a paper figure 1100 1101.

As the River Goddess, she encountered Jiang Cheng while he was posing as Lu Jianli. She married him, spent the night with him at her ancestral home, and gave him a bell before he left. She later entered the bell herself, remaining close to him 1130 1132 1134.

Wu Yingying volunteered to mark a landing point on the Old President’s bus for Lin Wan’er’s teleportation plan. She believed her connection to the bus gave her an advantage over an outsider, but she subsequently disappeared there. Jiang Cheng’s group later found her trapped in Jile Lou and forced by its master to attack him 1152 1510 1511. After the Water Lord broke that control, she apologized for failing to protect Jiang Cheng’s friends; Jiang Cheng assured her that the attack had not been her choice 1513.

Appearance

Wu Yingying has a fair face, willow-leaf eyebrows, luminous eyes, and delicate features. Jiang Cheng notices her flushed cheeks when she is shy 1130 1132.

Personality

Wu Yingying is direct about her affection for Jiang Cheng. She takes his hand during their wedding, insists on staying with him afterward, and later accepts a dangerous assignment intended to help him and his allies 1130 1152. Her concern extends to his friends: once freed from control in Jile Lou, she is upset that she could not protect Huai Yi and Wang Qi 1513.

Ghostly combat

Connection to the bus

• Wu Yingying believes the bus will not reject her, making her a candidate to mark a landing point inside its domain. Her disappearance there shows the assignment remains dangerous 1152 1510.

Relationships

• Jiang Cheng — She marries him while he is posing as Lu Jianli and remains devoted to him. He initially fears exposing his identity, but later comforts her after she is freed from the Jile Lou master’s control 1130 1131 1513.
