At around 2:40 a.m., I hurried back to Miss Yilan's home.
It was a detached little villa with a garden. From the garden, I could see some of the furnishings in the living room and children's bedroom. Her family was wealthy, and her parents had prepared a dowry for her long ago, but she was already thirty and still hadn't found her other half.
Just as I was about to unlock the door, the sound of the key turning seemed to wake the two dogs inside. Their sudden barking made my heart clench in pain.
A strong stench seeped through the crack in the door. Sensing something was wrong, I slowed down.
It wasn't the body odor of dogs, nor was it the fishy stench from Peanut and Walnut. Their saliva really did stink; Margaret had left the job of brushing their teeth to me. As I'd said before, the two dogs practically saw me as their mother. Margaret was their father.
This kind of family structure was common in modern households with dogs. If you didn't dominate your pet, it would shit on your head. It was a dog's nature, something written into its genes that couldn't be changed.
But the strange smell made me stop in my tracks, on full alert.
Naomi and Tom had gone mad. Over Margaret's dismembered body, they'd attacked me with near-maniacal insanity. Both of them had harbored a more or less pathological attachment to Margaret.
Miss Naomi and Margaret had been lovers back when they were students.
As for Mr. Tom, he regretted marrying a wife who couldn't have children, and Margaret became his next fantasy.
My wife seemed to be irresistible to everyone. Would this curse work on Walnut and Peanut, too? Would
