I pieced everything back together and gave it all back to you.
Margaret
The moment the ritual was complete, it felt as though something had been let go. Nothing mattered anymore.
The three of us sat by the dormitory corridor, basking in the sun. At first, none of us said a word.
Margaret took my hand. At last, she was whole again.
"Roger, little brother, what were you thinking when you received this package?"
Roger was clearly caught off guard by the question—
—He scratched his head hard, and the foolish grin on his face gradually faded into dejection. It was as if some unseen, intangible evil were churning in his heart, threatening to bring him under the curse of Hercules.
After a while, he perked up again. The vitality within the young man had won out once more.
"The last time I received an invitation to Miss Margaret's wedding, to be honest—"
Roger Fugen was a very candid boy—
"—I envied the love you two shared, Mr. Walker, and yours too, Big Sis Margaret."
"Later, I got a call about an emergency and went to help at the train crash site. That was when I found out that you, Mr. Walker—"
As he said this, Roger Fugen looked a little embarrassed.
"I thought that if Big Sis Margaret had no one to look after her, maybe, little by little, I could get closer to her heart. Maybe, slowly— I could become the pillar of her life. I wanted to look after her for you. She couldn't stay a widow forever."
I felt dazed. If Sam Walker—if I really had died just like that, then perhaps Roger would have made a reliable, good husband. He probably could have.
"There are no what-ifs." Margaret held
