October 31, 1929.
Inside the University of Rome conference hall.
Fermi was brimming with energy and high spirits.
Although this was his first time hosting a conference, every aspect of it had been flawless.
It gave him tremendous confidence.
And today's conference would be even more exhilarating!
At that moment, he began:
"At yesterday's conference, Professor Yu Yin spoke of using a Cyclotron to create Transuranium Elements."
"He attempted to bombard element 91 with Alpha Particles—helium ions—to generate element 93, a Transuranium Element, through Nuclear Fusion."
"But he did not succeed."
"The fusion process of heavy Atomic Nuclei requires an enormous amount of energy. Existing accelerators are not yet powerful enough."
"However, the Neutron bombardment method makes up for this shortcoming."
"It works by adding Neutrons to an Atomic Nucleus, then forming Transuranium Elements through Beta Decay."
"These are two different methods founded on different principles."
"Therefore, Neutron bombardment of uranium is currently the only means of preparing Transuranium Elements."
Everyone nodded at those words.
That was why the giants of experimental research had not panicked even though accelerators already existed.
Because accelerators could only accelerate charged particles and had no way to accelerate Neutrons, they could not replace Neutron bombardment experiments.
The heavy responsibility of finding Transuranium Elements could only fall upon traditional methods.
And the importance of Transuranium Elements was far beyond anything element 43 could compare to.
Then Fermi said with a sigh:
"Yet Transuranium Elements have always been like ghosts, leaving no trace."
"Whether they exist at all remains a mystery to this day."
"Though I have been hailed as the first person to discover Transuranium Elements, as long as they remain unfound, I cannot rest easy."
The others smiled knowingly.
They understood Fermi's feelings all too well.
"Without further ado, the conference officially begins!"
