Background & History

Jing Zhi grew up in the Jing family of Changfeng City alongside her younger sister Jing Yue and elder brother Jing Yao. Her family could not afford Academy tuition for both daughters; the military-earned Academy place went to Jing Yao, while Jing Zhi and Jing Yue attended private school and later studied under Lu Mingyuan. 11 46

When the Jing family later had enough money to send her to the Academy, Jing Zhi refused. She chose to preserve the funds as a dowry for Lu Mingyuan’s future creation of supernatural powers, placing her faith in him over her own educational opportunity. 46

Lu Mingyuan and Jing Zhi had known each other since childhood. After he persuaded her parents, the Jing family publicly announced their engagement, intending for them to marry upon adulthood. 13 Jing Zhi repeatedly feared that his eventual success might draw him away, but their conflicts over Guo Xianghua and the concept of an “official match” ultimately led to an explicit mutual commitment. 39 83 84

The couple formally married at the Household Registration Department. Lu Mingyuan gave Jing Zhi a jade bracelet left by his mother, transferred Tingtao Academy into her ownership, and provided Luck Points for her protection. 119

Tingtao Academy

Jing Zhi’s first major personal ideal was to enlarge and improve Tingtao Academy so more children could receive better education. Lu Mingyuan supported this ambition by placing her in charge of recruitment, venue expansion, and the study hall’s management. 57 64

As headmaster, Jing Zhi handled the academy’s growth, including plans to receive twenty-five transferred Yuwei Academy students, expand facilities, recruit teachers, and organize students into complete classes. 158 She also promoted specialized teaching by grade and sought practical improvements to literacy education. 158 163

Equality and the Great Harmony Ideal

Jing Zhi’s experience of being denied the Academy opportunity given to her brother sharpened her awareness of gender inequality. She questioned why women were underrepresented in schools and high office despite having no inherent disadvantage beyond physiological differences. 143

With Guo Xianghua, Cui Xueying, Meng Yilin, and others, Jing Zhi began pursuing social change through education. Their initial plan was to cultivate successors through schools, including the possibility of a girls’ school, even while acknowledging that local education alone might not transform all of human society. 144

Pinyin and Later Life

Jing Zhi spent more than two years collaborating on Pinyin rules that add pronunciation to existing Human Race characters. The resulting Human Race Text Pinyin Manual was uploaded to the Heavenly Dao Virtual Net, gained broad recognition, and was adopted for education by official bodies in all three countries. 204 205

She also helped establish a free retirement canteen for elderly residents with Lu Mingxi. 204

After learning that Great Grandmasters could attain immortality, Jing Zhi resolved to pursue that realm herself rather than accept eventual separation from Lu Mingyuan. She chose to spread the Great Harmony Society beyond humanity, beginning with the Fox Race in Canis Major. 276 By the finale, she remained Lu Mingyuan’s partner in exploration and accompanied him into a black hole. 278
