This volume laid the groundwork for the ending. It was the wind before the downpour; the next volume would be the last.
My habit when writing a book is to think of an ending first, then come up with a matching beginning. I fill in the middle by improvising. Basically, I just make shit up, and when I run out of ideas, I wrap things up.
I had settled on this book's ending before I even started writing it. Back then, I hadn't so much as named the protagonist. I'm terrible at names.
