Xiao Yan became a Dou Zhe at eight, but his cultivation soon regressed to the Third Stage of Dou Qi. The apparent loss was a deliberate trial arranged around the dormant Yao Chen in his Bone Flame Ring, meant to temper Xiao Yan's pride and force him to mature through adversity 193 209. Nalan Yanran and Xiao Xun'er remained at his side during his humiliation, helping restore his resolve when he was treated as a fallen genius 194.

Xiao Li later negotiated directly with Yao Chen: Yao Chen would accept Xiao Yan as his disciple and guide him, while Xiao Li would eventually restore Yao Chen's body 222.
