Orochimaru sat beneath the chandelier, poring over the documents Senju Tobirama had left behind while developing Impure World Reincarnation. His golden eyes gleamed in the darkness.

As a forbidden technique that summoned the souls of the dead to fight, Impure World Reincarnation could, in Orochimaru's view, be divided into three basic steps:

Using a part of the deceased's body as a medium to establish a connection with a soul in the Pure Land,

using a living person's body to create a vessel for the soul,

and controlling the Reanimated Body in battle.

Of these, the second step was the most difficult. The quality of the vessel directly determined how much of the soul's strength from life could be brought to bear. The third step was the most important: if the summoned Reanimated Body couldn't be controlled, the forbidden technique couldn't be considered a success.

But for Orochimaru at this point, the latter two steps were irrelevant. After all, he wasn't actually trying to perform Impure World Reincarnation.
