Background / History
Damn Heaven identifies Li Shimin as the descended Ziwei Great Emperor and asks Verdant Green Maiden to protect him before his birth. She accepts enthusiastically, viewing the arrangement as an opportunity to form a connection with an immortal reincarnation 214 216.
Li Shimin is born to Li Yuan and Dou Shi amid omens surrounding the Ziwei Emperor Star. Verdant Green Maiden names him Shimin, hoping that he will “Aid the World and Pacify the People,” while Li Yuan gives him the childhood name Jia Lan 217 219.
As a child, he displays exceptional intelligence: at three years old, he completes all of Verdant Green Maiden’s assigned curriculum far faster than expected. She attributes this aptitude to his identity as the Ziwei Great Emperor’s reincarnation 224. He is later formally accepted into the Ghost Valley Sect alongside Li Jiancheng and Li Xiu Ning 226.
Personality
Li Shimin is respectful toward his master and elders, maintaining formal courtesy even when faced with people who refuse his deference. His upbringing and discipline are repeatedly noted by those around him 241.
He places the state and ordinary people above personal interests. When preparing to campaign against his rebellious brother Li Yuanji, he agrees that “everything must be prioritized for the greater good.” He also insists that anyone who has rendered merit to Great Tang deserves protection regardless of identity 265 278.
Though initially devoted to supporting Li Jiancheng as Crown Prince, Li Shimin gradually accepts that he must protect himself, his household, and the people of the Celestial Strategy Mansion. Once he resolves to oppose the political danger around him, he commits fully and refuses to leave himself a path of retreat 287 313 314.
He is notably magnanimous toward defeated rivals. After capturing Dou Jiande, he releases him from restraints, treats him with respect rather than as a criminal, and seeks his aid in peacefully securing Hebei 308.
Abilities & Skills
Military Command and Strategy
Li Shimin is regarded as Great Tang’s foremost commander, repeatedly defeating larger or entrenched enemy forces through rapid maneuvers, intelligence, and decisive attacks.
- Retakes Hedong in two months by combining fortified defense, scorched earth tactics, a cavalry flanking maneuver, and the seizure of enemy supply lines 299.
- Anticipates Dou Jiande’s relief force for Luoyang and deliberately chooses to meet it at Hulao Pass rather than prevent its advance prematurely 305.
- Uses harassment and deception to make the Xia Army believe the Tang forces are weak, drawing them into a disadvantageous battle 306 307.
- Defeats Dou Jiande’s force of one hundred thousand with only several thousand cavalrymen, leading to the surrender of Luoyang 309.
- Wins a later series of campaigns across Hebei against the rebuilt Xia forces, earning even Dou Jiande’s recognition as the only leader fit to stand above him 318.
Leadership and Statecraft
Li Shimin earns loyalty through personal humility, clear rewards for merit, and practical concern for stability.
- Does not refer to himself as “this king” when speaking to others, a habit credited to Verdant Green Maiden’s teachings and one that earns popular affection 280.
- Secures Dou Jiande’s cooperation by recognizing his prestige in Hebei and refusing to humiliate him as a captive 308.
- Receives authority above the Three Dukes and establishes the Celestial Strategy Mansion after the Luoyang campaign 309.
- Ascends as emperor under the Zhenguan era and is charged by Verdant Green Maiden with bringing peace and prosperity to the people 327.
- Reunites with the returned Li Jiancheng and invites him to govern Great Tang jointly rather than treating him as a political threat 329.
Exceptional Learning
Li Shimin demonstrates extraordinary aptitude from childhood.
- Completes a curriculum intended to occupy half a day in far less time at only three years old 224.
- Studies military texts and continues refining his understanding of warfare even while managing political crises 323.
- Shows interest in music and receives the score of Verdant Green Maiden’s King of Qin Enters the Battle Song 308.
Imperial Destiny
Li Shimin possesses unusually pure and powerful Dragon Qi, distinguishable even among the Li Tang imperial family. Verdant Green Maiden identifies his presence in the army by this aura 274.
- His identity as the Ziwei Great Emperor’s reincarnation gives him exceptional destiny and status among immortals 214 216.
- He remains physically mortal despite that identity and can still be killed like any other human 275.
- Heavenly forces attempt to suppress him through the Tang Army’s epidemic during the Hulao campaign, though Verdant Green Maiden prevents the plot from succeeding 306 307.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Shu Campaign
When Li Yuanji declares independence in Shu, Li Yuan orders Li Shimin to retake the region. Li Shimin seeks Verdant Green Maiden’s insight into his brother’s past and leads the Tang Army alongside Li Jing. After learning that Verdant Green Maiden has killed Li Yuanji, he reports the matter to Li Yuan but prioritizes rapidly crushing resistance throughout Shu 265 275.
Recovery of Hedong
Li Shimin defeats Liu Wuzhou and Song Jingang, recovers Taiyuan and Jinyang, and stabilizes Great Tang’s northern and southern territories. His success elevates him above nearly every figure in the dynasty besides Li Yuan, while also widening the gap between his prestige and Li Jiancheng’s 299 300.
Hulao Pass and the Fall of Luoyang
Appointed Grand Marshal of the Eastern Expedition, Li Shimin marches on Luoyang with Verdant Green Maiden. He besieges Wang Shichong, draws Dou Jiande’s army to Hulao Pass, and defeats the Xia forces despite an epidemic and supernatural interference against his army 300 304 306 307.
After capturing Dou Jiande, Li Shimin persuades him to help secure Wang Shichong’s surrender. The campaign brings Hebei, Henan, and Luoyang under Tang control, after which Li Yuan grants Li Shimin the title of Celestial Strategy Supreme General and permits him to establish the Celestial Strategy Mansion 308 309.
Succession Crisis
Li Shimin initially insists that Great Tang’s future belongs to Li Jiancheng, but Verdant Green Maiden warns that Li Yuan’s political balancing may force the brothers into conflict. Once he learns that Li Yuan intends to eliminate him, Li Shimin resolves to defend his family and followers rather than remain passive 313 314.
Li Jiancheng later dies while fighting the Turks after Li Shimin’s reinforcements are delayed by severe weather. Li Yuan accuses Li Shimin of deliberately allowing the death and orders the destruction of Verdant Green Maiden’s temple, though Li Shimin openly defends his master’s compassion and innocence 321.
Ascension as Emperor
Li Yuan eventually appoints Li Shimin Crown Prince, hands him the affairs of state, and abdicates two months later. Li Shimin ascends as emperor, establishes the Zhenguan era, and promises Verdant Green Maiden that he will create prosperity for the people and bring all under heaven into order 327.
When Li Jiancheng later returns alive under a new identity, Li Shimin welcomes him back and asks him to govern Great Tang alongside him 329.
