History
Chenzhong Terrace began as an ordinary bell terrace on a high mountain peak of the Divine Sword Sect. Its giant bell marked the time for the entire sect mountain range, and Li Gan was assigned there as a menial disciple responsible for ringing it. 1
Li Gan transformed the previously neglected post into his private cultivation base. His occasional absences caused complaints from inner-sect disciples who relied on the bell for timekeeping, so Zhou Buping proposed assigning an additional menial disciple. Li Gan selected Liu Ming, personally teaching him to ring the bell and manage the terrace’s routine affairs. 54 55
The site gradually gained a reputation among menial disciples because of Li Gan’s association with it and Chen Yong’s rise through the combat rankings. Hall Master Xu ultimately prohibited menial disciples from approaching the terrace to prevent them from disturbing Li Gan’s cultivation. 43 54
After Li Gan became a Heavenly Human, he requested that the mountain containing Chenzhong Terrace become the base of his Heartless Lineage. The sect named the mountain Heartless Peak, though Li Gan and his disciples continued to treat Chenzhong Terrace as their central residence and training ground. 161
Appearance
Chenzhong Terrace stands on a high mountain peak within the Divine Sword Sect. A bell tower rests atop a massive boulder and houses the enormous Chenzhong Bell. 1
- The bell’s toll can be heard throughout the Divine Sword Sect mountain range. 1
- An hourglass is used to calibrate the bell-ringing schedule. 21 54
- Wooden huts were built around the terrace for Li Gan’s disciples and residents. 141 159
- An underground palace beneath the terrace later serves as one of Li Gan’s cultivation sites. 173 201
Functions
Timekeeping
The terrace’s original duty is to sound the chen bell at fixed times for the Divine Sword Sect.
- Its toll carries across the sect’s mountain range. 1
- Regular ringing is important enough that missed chimes drew complaints from the inner sect. 54
- Liu Ming, and later younger disciples such as Yu Li, take responsibility for ringing the bell when Li Gan is unavailable. 55 199
Cultivation Enhancement
The Chenzhong Bell directly supports cultivation, with its effects increasing after each upgrade.
- The Treasure-grade bell supplies energy for cultivation, allowing Li Gan to train more frequently without exhausting his potential. 7
- The Dharma-grade bell improves Li Gan’s internal qi circulation and passively drives his Heartless Sword Art. 21
- The Spirit-grade bell provides a daily head-cleansing enlightenment effect within its range. 141
- Following the Spirit-grade upgrade, Li Gan’s cultivation, sword-intent comprehension, Great River Sword Qi, and Blood Qi Sacred Domain all advance substantially faster. 143
Chen Bell Domain
The terrace can project a domain centered on the Chenzhong Bell.
- It can form a bell-shaped defensive barrier from heaven-and-earth origin qi and Li Gan’s own power. 61
- The domain conceals Li Gan’s aura and can disguise the sword intent embedded within the barrier. 61
- Its range eventually covers roughly half of the Divine Sword Sect. 199
- It shields Li Mo and her sister from the influence of the dark cyan demon mark on their wrists. 153 159
- During a demon-thought attack on the sect, a bell toll from the terrace dispersed the invading influence and restored affected disciples to their senses. 199
Healing and Restoration
The Dharma-grade bell possesses self-repair and healing properties.
- It can repair itself and heal Li Gan, giving it considerable long-term survival value. 21
- Its restorative effect on others remains limited at the Dharma-tool stage. 69
- After Li Gan’s Heavenly Human breakthrough, the bell’s effects remove his lingering aftereffects after a day of rest. 122
Residents and Caretakers
- Li Gan — Assigned as the terrace’s menial bell-ringer; later makes it his primary cultivation base and the center of Heartless Peak. 1 161
- Liu Ming — Chosen from the Hundred Herb Garden to assist with bell-ringing and daily tasks; remains at the terrace for over two decades before entering the inner sect. 54 55 143
- Bai Yun and Chai Shao — Li Gan’s disciples, who live and cultivate at the terrace after their arrival. 141 142
- Li Mo and her sister — Remain at the terrace because the Chen Bell Domain suppresses the influence of their demon marks. 153 159
- Little White — A white fox that can operate the striker; it rings the bell during the demon-thought crisis. 174 199
Trivia
- Before Li Gan’s rise, Chenzhong Terrace was considered such an undesirable post that menial disciples said “even a dog” would not want to go there. 54
- Li Gan considers the terrace more secure than the Dao Sect’s powerful grand array because he can cultivate within the Chen Bell Domain. 202
- The bell’s toll helps Divine Sword Sect cultivators avoid the qi deviations that become more common after the Human Realm’s barrier closes. 176
