"Beep, beep, beep!!!"
"Hoo, hoo, hoo!!!"
Betkas felt an incomparable sense of refreshment throughout his entire body, as if he were soaking in cold water. His body felt filled with a crisp, revitalizing sensation, and even the wounds on his skin no longer pained him. He opened his eyes slightly, though his vision remained blurry. One thing was certain, however: Betkas knew he was safe.
Looking at the green algae-filled water in front of him, he realized he was undergoing treatment. An oxygen mask was pressed against his mouth, and although he was stark naked, he didn't care. As long as his wounds healed, nothing else mattered. Besides, he was still in the body of a child, so there wasn't much to be embarrassed about.
Just then, an Antenna Alien wearing a research suit held a white sheet of paper resembling a medical record and looked at Betkas. "This Saiyan brat has regained consciousness. That was quite fast."
Nearby, another similar alien gestured toward Vegeta and Nappa, whom he was monitoring, and spoke up, "The two brats over here haven't suffered as much damage as that Saiyan kid, but they still haven't regained consciousness."
The first Antenna Alien turned back to the semi-conscious Betkas. "Alright, Saiyan brat. You're fully healed. I'm going to drain the healing water now." The next moment, the alien pulled a switch, and the water in Betkas's tank drained away instantly. Betkas steadied himself, shaking his head to clear the fog.
He still felt mentally exhausted; after all, struggling on the brink of death was no laughing matter. The Antenna Alien handed a new set of Battle Armor to Betkas and said, "Saiyan brat, put this on. And this—this is your spoils of war for this mission. From now on, just wait for orders from Lord Frieza or Lord Zarbon. Don't go wandering around at other times." He then tossed a Gold-Lensed Device toward Betkas.
Betkas caught the armor with quick reflexes, then snatched the flying device out of the air with his right hand. He suddenly snapped to full alertness, realizing that what he held in his right hand was a Scouter—the essential gear for aliens in the Dragon Ball universe. This brought him immense joy; with this gadget, he finally had some leverage. Unlike this last mission, where he hadn't known the strength of his opponents and ended up nearly dying, if he had known how powerful they were from the start, he would have been prepared.
Betkas would have initiated his Great Ape Transformation to fight from the beginning. After all, he had no intention of throwing his life away. Since he had arrived in this Dragon Ball world, rather than dying as a background character or a nameless extra, he might as well train hard and face off against the protagonist, Son Goku. If he got killed, he could only blame his own bad luck. Of course, that was assuming he could survive until the moment Son Goku arrived in the universe.
He didn't have much confidence in that, either. One had to remember that the universe was full of powerhouses; at least for now, it was extremely challenging and dangerous for him. If he deserted Frieza and hid on Earth, he might avoid danger, but his strength would stagnate. The early-stage Earth was simply not suitable for someone with his "high potential."
Working under Frieza was dangerous, but at least it allowed for limitless growth. This wasn't an ancient Chinese empire where he would be viewed with suspicion; even if he were, it would only be by the likes of Zarbon, Dodoria, or the Ginyu Force. Frieza would never harbor such petty concerns because he possessed absolute power and absolute self-confidence.
As for dealing with the likes of Dodoria and his crew, Betkas had ten thousand reasons to be confident he could outplay them. The most terrifying trait of the Saiyans—one that Dodoria and the others had yet to experience—was that every time they returned from the brink of death, their strength would increase. As for how much, it likely depended on their current level of power.
He put on the Battle Armor, placed the Scouter over his left eye, and pressed the button, scanning the still-unconscious Vegeta and Nappa.
"Beep, beep, beep!!!"
Betkas listened to the mechanical analysis, and upon seeing Nappa's reading, the corners of his mouth curled into a smirk. He muttered to himself, "As expected, he's weak. Only 972 power level this time." He then glanced at Vegeta and began to scan him.
"Beep, beep, beep!!!"
Ignoring the aliens observing him, Betkas looked at Vegeta with slight surprise. Vegeta's power level is actually 4,521! That's a 50% increase from before. By that ratio, I shouldn't be doing too badly myself.
Just as Betkas was wondering about his own current strength, the Antenna Alien who had given him the clothes seemed to read his mind. "Kid, I didn't expect you to be so capable. After that death-defying battle, you seem to have improved. You've reached a power level of 4,752. That's much higher than the brat over there. I really don't know how you lot do it. Saiyans really are a bunch of incomprehensible wild monkeys..."
"Power level 4,752?"
Betkas was stunned. He hadn't expected his power level to surpass Vegeta's. Before this, Vegeta had been 9 points stronger than him, but after this invasion mission, he was now nearly 129 points ahead. This gap in growth left him somewhat puzzled.
Betkas rested his chin in his hand, looking at Vegeta thoughtfully. Is it because the extent of our injuries was different, or is it a matter of talent? He wrapped his tail around his waist, still confused.
But confusion aside, he needed to go to his quarters to reflect on things. Although the Great Ape Transformation had prevented him from fully experiencing the thrill of a fair fight, this battle had at least forced him through a brush with death.
Betkas decided to conduct a post-battle summary and look into inventing some new techniques. He also wanted to explore whether he could control his ki or sense the presence of others. After all, this was the most crucial and fundamental aspect of the Dragon Ball world. He didn't want to rely on the Scouter forever; it was ineffective against certain beings, and more often than not, it could end up being his downfall.
