Background / History
Lin Du found Chao Feng starving in a crumbling mountain temple on the southwestern border of the East. The creature had been perched on a broken statue and was near death; after Lin Du fed it half a piece of dry bread, it attached itself to him and the pair inexplicably formed an unbreakable Symbiotic Contract. 5
Chao Feng subsequently accompanied Lin Du through his magical research and travels, helping him avoid traps and assess danger. When Lin Du accepted a teaching post at Hogwarts, Chao Feng followed him into the castle, usually concealed in the shadows of his robes. 5 29
At Hogwarts, it became involved in Lin Du's investigations into the Basilisk, Horcruxes, and Ancient Magic. During the effort to help Helena Ravenclaw enter the Room of Requirement, Chao Feng used its soul-sensory abilities to receive Helena's memories and relay their impressions to Lin Du through their contract. 20 76
Appearance
In its usual form, Chao Feng is a small black-feathered creature resembling an owl crossed with an unknown Eastern divine beast. Its full form is a much larger, scaled and winged divine beast. 5 95 132
- Black feathers patterned faintly with bronze; matte dark-gold beak and claws. 5
- Large amber eyes, a short jade horn on its forehead, and three rotating emerald spots at the tip of its tail. 5
- Full form has fine silver scales, a sleek powerful body, prominent horns, broad wings, and a majestic presence. 95 132
- Can take humanoid forms and imitate the faces and bodies of other people, including Lin Du, Severus Snape, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Cedric Diggory, Filius Flitwick, and Albus Dumbledore. 157
- Its humanoid transformation is temporary and can last no longer than a day. 158
Personality
Chao Feng is sarcastic, contemptuous, and relentlessly fond of exposing Lin Du's motives. It regularly mocks Lin Du's dangerous research, strict teaching methods, lack of broomstick skill, and attempts to understand human relationships. 5 15 33 164
Beneath its mockery, it is protective of Lin Du and becomes visibly anxious when Lin Du is endangered by contract backlash or Petrification. It supports Lin Du's plans even when it objects to the risks involved. 43 52 61
It is proud of its divine-beast identity and takes particular offense at being called an owl, small, or a “young one.” 95 132
Abilities & Skills

- Commonly emerges from and retreats into shadows around Hogwarts. 7 15
- Uses concealment for observation and to remain close to Lin Du without attracting attention. 5 23
Thought-Sensing and Mental Communication
Chao Feng can vaguely hear others' thoughts and communicate directly through the mind, especially with Lin Du through their contract.

- Speaks directly into Harry Potter's mind during Harry's training. 95
- Maintains mental contact with Lin Du while he is petrified. 52 61
Magical and Soul Perception
Chao Feng can sense magical disturbances, the emotional states of ghosts, and certain hostile presences.

- Can sense ghosts' broad emotional states, though it cannot fully read their incomplete souls or determine every detail of an obsession. 71
- Warned Lin Du about Snape's intentions while Lin Du was petrified. 61
- Its detection is limited by Hogwarts' chaotic magical field and ancient protections. 23
Memory Transmission
Through its bond with Lin Du, Chao Feng can directly feel another soul's memories and transmit sensory impressions to Lin Du.
- Required Helena Ravenclaw to lower her defenses and permit contact with her memory core. 76
- Relayed Helena's memories through the contract so Lin Du could use magic to shape a temporary physical form for her. 76
- This process transmits impressions rather than perfectly reproducing every detail of a memory. 76
Transformation
Chao Feng can enlarge into its divine-beast form and shapeshift into humanoid appearances.
- Revealed its full scaled, horned, winged form to demonstrate that it could protect Harry. 95
- Enlarged inside Lin Du's office after Newt Scamander called it small, overturning ink, parchment, and other objects. 132
- Gathered sufficient magic power to take a humanoid form, beginning with a muscular likeness of Lin Du. 157
- Its transformations can create practical complications; Lin Du publicly described its humanoid form as a Transfiguration-created assistant to avoid explaining its true nature. 162
