It's the Call-Sound Ghost!
Zheng Que realized, his brows furrowing instantly. Last night, it was only after he responded to the entity that this Call-Sound Ghost was able to enter his room.
But today, it didn't even need him to respond; it had broken in directly!
He looked down at the empty floor by the bed. The shoes he had taken off when he came up were still lying there, one facing up and one facing down.
However, Zheng Que's expression didn't relax in the slightest. He had seen his own lifespan on the Life and Death Book just a moment ago: it was tonight, at Hai Hour!
If what was written in that Life and Death Book was true, then once Hai Hour arrived, he would die at the hands of this Call-Sound Ghost!
"Disciple, come out! Come out quickly!"
"Master remembers your scent; you cannot run!"
The familiar voice continued to call out, drawing closer and closer. In the blink of an eye, it was already right in front of him.
Suddenly, Zheng Que felt the end of the bed sink. The setting sun cast a glow, making the room exceptionally bright. He widened his eyes and stared, but he couldn't see anything. Yet, on the bedding at the foot of the bed, bloody footprints were clearly and rapidly appearing.
Those footprints moved with steady, purposeful strides toward him.
The Call-Sound Ghost had found him!
Zheng Que was startled, but he reacted quickly, immediately raising his hand to throw a punch at the location of the bloody footprints.
Whoosh!
He felt his fist strike a mass of cold, soft substance, like a cloud of mist. There was no significant resistance, and his fist passed straight through it.
Zheng Que froze. He didn't know if he had hit the entity or not. The next moment, a biting, frigid aura suddenly swept over, rushing straight toward his face.
In an instant, Zheng Que felt chilled to the bone. The icy energy felt like a bucket of ice and snow poured over his head, and an boundless cold enveloped him completely.
He was all too familiar with this freezing sensation that heralded death. Without a moment's hesitation, he scrambled to roll toward the head of the bed.
Swish...
Zheng Que immediately felt a chill on his left cheek, and warm blood began to drip down his face.
The hairs all over his body stood on end in a delayed reaction. It felt as if he had been even a fraction of a second slower, he would be a headless corpse right now!
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh...
A sinister wind erupted within the room, howling and raging. The bloody footprints on the bed suddenly accelerated, lunging toward Zheng Que.
With no time to think, he immediately stood up and kicked toward the spot where the bloody footprints appeared.
Whoosh!
Just like before, Zheng Que felt the leg he had kicked out pass through a mass of cold, gloomy mist, hitting nothing else.
Having kicked at empty air, he hurriedly jumped off the bed.
Thud!
The moment Zheng Que landed, he immediately saw the bloody footprints on the bed chasing him down to the floor.
However, as soon as the bloody footprints touched the ground, they vanished instantly.
Immediately after, he felt a gust of cold, ghostly wind strike him, appearing right in front of him in the blink of an eye!
Zheng Que hurriedly dodged to the side, but a sharp pain instantly flared in his chest. A foot-long wound had already been clawed into him; his torn clothes revealed the mangled flesh, and blood gushed out in a steady stream.
At the same time, he immediately threw a punch toward the spot where he had just been standing.
His fist whistled through a cold, ghostly breeze, hitting nothing solid.
Before Zheng Que could pull his hand back, a biting, icy chill instantly enveloped his arm.
Following that, a piercing pain shot through his arm, as if something had bitten down on it hard, and spots of blood began to emerge out of thin air.
Zheng Que's face turned pale, and he hurriedly whipped his arm to the side.
Just then, his injured arm suddenly felt as if it had struck something solid. With this forceful motion, the entity biting his arm was immediately flung away.
Bang!
With a dull thud, it sounded as if something heavy had hit the ground, yet nothing could be seen with the naked eye.
"Ah!!!"
A shrill, miserable scream suddenly rang out in the air.
"Disciple, you've hurt your master!"
"Disciple! You are dead!"
A low, hoarse voice echoed continuously throughout the room.
The ghostly energy in the room surged rapidly. As the chill permeated the space, the temperature plummeted, and frost began to coat the floor.
Watching this scene, Zheng Que realized it immediately: it was the blood!
Ordinary punches and kicks would pass straight through the body of a Call-Sound Ghost.
Only the blood of a cultivator could truly inflict damage upon it!
As his thoughts raced, Zheng Que quickly wiped the blood from his chest wound onto his other hand.
At this very moment, he felt the cold, ghostly wind rush toward his face once again. He immediately threw a punch with his blood-stained fist.
Bang!
Unlike the previous few attacks, this time, Zheng Que instantly felt that he had struck something!
"Aaaaaah!"
A particularly high-pitched shriek rang out. The Call-Sound Ghost seemed to have suffered a serious injury all of a sudden.
Seeing that his attack was effective, Zheng Que stopped playing defense. He threw another punch in the direction the sound came from.
Bang!
The tactile feedback was even more distinct this time; it felt as if he had shattered something directly!
"Stop! Stop..."
"Don't hit me anymore..."
That low, hoarse voice sounded again, but Zheng Que had no intention of paying it any mind. He immediately pressed his advantage, unleashing a flurry of wild punches toward the direction of the voice.
Clatter, bang, thud...
After a full dozen punches, a blood-stained silhouette gradually emerged in the air before him.
It was a humanoid figure, roughly the same height as an average person. Its head was bald and featured five crooked, elongated mouths. Each mouth was split wide, seemingly dividing the head into five uneven sections. The scarlet lips twitched and opened repeatedly, revealing rows of dense, sharp teeth.
In the gaps between the mouths, seventeen ears had sprouted. These ears were larger than those of a normal human and faced in every direction.
Other than that, it had no hair, no eyes, no eyebrows, and no nose. Where its arms should have been, there were instead a pair of sharp claws. Only its feet remained in the shape of human feet.
Bang!!!
Zheng Que threw another punch, landing squarely on the head of the blood-stained silhouette.
The next moment, the silhouette collapsed straight to the ground. Its mouths moved rapidly for a few seconds, as if trying to say something, but in the end, it made no sound and soon stopped moving entirely.
Is it finished?
After the burst of exertion, Zheng Que was now somewhat exhausted and panting heavily. He reached out to smear more blood from his wound, intending to go up and deliver one final blow to the Call-Sound Ghost.
Just then, the silhouette of the Call-Sound Ghost suddenly dissolved as if it were melting.
The bloodstains that had been clinging to it lost their anchor and fell onto the ground.
The lingering, oppressive yin energy in the room dissipated without a trace.
Before Zheng Que could react, the scene before his eyes shifted, and the dilapidated Wide Hall reappeared.
He was once again sitting on that wobbly armchair. On the long table in front of him lay the open Life and Death Book. On the first page, which had previously been blank except for his own name, new, peculiar characters had appeared beneath his name...
