Background / History

Qing Li was originally a human from Tu Prefecture of the Great Li Dynasty. She died by hanging at the age of sixteen during the Hour of the Rat, later becoming a Female Hanging Ghost. 10

When Zheng Que first captured her, Qing Li lacked sentience and was nearly destroyed by his spirit blood. Entry into the ruined Underworld transformed her: she regained clear intelligence, memories from life, and the ferocity accumulated as a Resentful Soul. Although Zheng Que's Ghost Controlling Technique bound her, she became powerful enough that she could have killed him without its restraint. 13

After Qing Li repeatedly hunted ghosts and supplied the Life and Death Book with names, Zheng Que conferred an Imperial Edict upon her. The conferment formally recognized her as a Resentful Soul and appointed her as a deployable Yin Messenger, allowing Zheng Que to summon and dismiss her directly through the Underworld. 32 33

Appearance

Qing Li typically manifests as a slender Female Hanging Ghost in white robes, with black hair, crimson eyes, and a distinct purple-black strangulation mark around her neck. After becoming a Yin Messenger, her hair was neatly tied back and she wore a Service Token with a green tassel at her waist. 24 33

Personality

Qing Li is proud, aggressive, and openly contemptuous of Zheng Que in the human world, habitually calling him a “human brat.” She is boastful about her strength and readily challenges opponents, including Zheng Que himself. 22 24 411

In the Underworld, however, she becomes markedly cautious and deferential. She kneels before Zheng Que's Underworld identity, delivers elaborate flattery, and eagerly seeks increases in Yin Energy. 21 58 62

She is highly competitive with other Ghost Servants, especially Ku Lan, and reacts badly to perceived challenges to her status. Despite her arrogance, she has protected Zheng Que, guarded his cultivation, and fought relentlessly on his behalf. 31 54 56
