Background / History

Qing Li was originally a human from Tu Prefecture of the Great Li Dynasty. She died by hanging at the age of sixteen during the Hour of the Rat, later becoming a Female Hanging Ghost. 10

When Zheng Que first captured her, Qing Li lacked sentience and was nearly destroyed by his spirit blood. Entry into the ruined Underworld transformed her: she regained clear intelligence, memories from life, and the ferocity accumulated as a Resentful Soul. Although Zheng Que's Ghost Controlling Technique bound her, she became powerful enough that she could have killed him without its restraint. 13

After Qing Li repeatedly hunted ghosts and supplied the Life and Death Book with names, Zheng Que conferred an Imperial Edict upon her. The conferment formally recognized her as a Resentful Soul and appointed her as a deployable Yin Messenger, allowing Zheng Que to summon and dismiss her directly through the Underworld. 32 33

Appearance

Qing Li typically manifests as a slender Female Hanging Ghost in white robes, with black hair, crimson eyes, and a distinct purple-black strangulation mark around her neck. After becoming a Yin Messenger, her hair was neatly tied back and she wore a Service Token with a green tassel at her waist. 24 33

  • White clothing and long black hair. 21
  • Crimson eyes and a visible ligature mark on her throat. 80
  • Dense Yin Energy that can chill an entire room and obscure vision like black mist. 15 175
  • Her manifested form may gain additional heads or arms when using Spirit Descent or combat abilities. 24 195

Personality

Qing Li is proud, aggressive, and openly contemptuous of Zheng Que in the human world, habitually calling him a “human brat.” She is boastful about her strength and readily challenges opponents, including Zheng Que himself. 22 24 411

In the Underworld, however, she becomes markedly cautious and deferential. She kneels before Zheng Que's Underworld identity, delivers elaborate flattery, and eagerly seeks increases in Yin Energy. 21 58 62

She is highly competitive with other Ghost Servants, especially Ku Lan, and reacts badly to perceived challenges to her status. Despite her arrogance, she has protected Zheng Que, guarded his cultivation, and fought relentlessly on his behalf. 31 54 56

Abilities & Skills

Hanging

Qing Li's species talent is Hanging, which manifests as a rope that constricts a target's neck. Initially, it could only affect one target at a time. 61 197

  • Can produce a rope around an opponent's neck to restrain or strangle them. 411
  • Became capable of affecting multiple targets after Qing Li became the Main Soul of the Soul-Calling Banner. 195
  • Its theoretical scale depends on the strength accumulated by the ghost using it. 61

Limb Extension and Hundred Hands

Qing Li can extend her arms into long, whip-like limbs. She inherited this method from Old Lady Zhao. 22

  • Limb Extension — Her arms can rapidly lengthen to strike or seize targets across a room. 22
  • Hundred Hands — Allows her to grow additional arms; later manifestations produced numerous arms for mass attacks. 59 195
  • Her multiplying arms can overwhelm evasive opponents and intercept repeated movements. 411

Jealous Finger, Eerie Poison, and Mass Grudge

Qing Li possesses several close-range and control-oriented ghost skills. 411 412

  • Jealous Finger — Lengthens her nails into sharp claws capable of shredding Zheng Que's Blood Skulls. 411
  • Eerie Poison — A wound inflicted by Qing Li gradually weakens a living being or ghost until death; it can also dissolve parasitic Blood Skulls into foul pus. 196 411
  • Mass Grudge — Summons densely packed ghost hands from beneath the ground to seize, drag, and restrain a target. 411 412

Soul Howl and Soul-Calling Wind

Qing Li's soul-based techniques allow her to attack minds and command ghosts. 59 196

  • Soul Howl — Attacks the mind of a living person and the soul body of a ghost. 59
  • Soul-Calling Wind — Can subdue ghosts Qing Li selects. 196
  • Her Soul Wind can be used defensively against Zheng Que's Heavenly Wheel Mystic Fire. 411

Yin Messenger Authority

As a conferred Yin Messenger, Qing Li possesses official standing in Zheng Que's Underworld. 33

  • Zheng Que can summon her into the Underworld by calling her true name. 33
  • She can be withdrawn from the Underworld at Zheng Que's command. 33
  • Her Yin Messenger abilities include sensing ghosts, viewing their information, and sealing them. 33

Service Token

Qing Li's Service Token is both a mark of office and a combat tool. 33 54

  • The token manifests through runes in her eyes. 54
  • She used it to dispel Ku Lan's illusory Umbrella Girl clones. 54

Soul-Calling Banner Main Soul

Qing Li became the Main Soul of the Soul-Calling Banner, granting her authority over the ghosts connected to it. 137 138

  • Can command groups of ghosts through the banner and use them to break restraints or attack enemies. 137 138
  • Summoned and controlled ghosts from Shu Family Fort and Taiping County through the banner. 140
  • Several of her original soul winds were sealed when Zheng Que refined the banner with insufficient cultivation. 196

Spirit Descent Compatibility

Through Zheng Que's Spirit Descent Technique, Qing Li's spirit can temporarily inhabit his body. 24

  • Her head manifests from Zheng Que's neck while black-and-white patterns cover his body. 24
  • Zheng Que gains access to Qing Li's methods, with power exceeding her normal use but slower execution speed. 24
  • Zheng Que's physical body cannot fully release Qing Li's true strength. 24
  • The technique drains Qing Li's Yin Energy; she is initially immobile for roughly ten breaths and remains weakened for about an hour afterward. 24 25
  • Qing Li and Nian Nu can jointly descend into Zheng Que through the technique. 575

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Service Token — An Underworld-issued token marking Qing Li as a Yin Messenger; used to dispel illusions. 33 54
  • Soul-Calling Banner — Qing Li serves as its Main Soul and can direct its Soul Wind and associated ghosts. 137 138
  • Soul-Nurturing Bag — Used by Zheng Que to carry and release Qing Li when traveling. 82 102

Relationships

  • Zheng Que — Her master and the ruler of the ruined Underworld. Qing Li is bound through Ghost Controlling Technique and serves as his Yin Messenger, though their relationship is marked by constant insults, power struggles, and practical cooperation. 13 33 411
  • Nian Nu — Qing Li captured Nian Nu from the Jia siblings' side and used an Imperial Edict to make her a Ghost Servant. Nian Nu addresses Qing Li as “Lady Qing Li” and is deeply loyal to her. 78 102 166
