Cheng Tingxue is the daughter of Cheng Yuan, patriarch of the Cheng Family. Her marriage into the Xu Family left her vulnerable after her husband died: as she had no children and was considered an outsider by the Xu Family, its branches planned to hand her over to Lu Hong of the Canal Gang while disguising the arrangement as an abduction by Iron Butcher. She was sent back toward Pingcheng under the pretense of an escort mission. 31 39

The return convoy was repeatedly attacked, while the maid accompanying Tingxue secretly marked their location with a sachet and retainer Xue Hai eventually revealed his own betrayal.
