"What? Missing memories?"
Si Ai frowned, inserted the electronic cigarette into her left ear, and controlled a nearby machine to perform a comprehensive scan of Sun Jack's head.
"Strange, there's no damage to your brain. Try to select it, where is your last memory point?"
As Si Ai waved her hand, the video shot by the drone appeared before Sun Jack like a cut-out photo, for him to choose from.
As Sun Jack gently slid his hand in the air, the video clip began to fast forward, and finally, Sun Jack started browsing the segment where his memory disappeared.
Watching himself in the video, effortlessly piercing the power sources of those AABs, Sun Jack was startled himself.
"Is this me? Is this really me?" Sun Jack looked at himself in the video in surprise.
"How can I be so awesome and I don't even know it?"
Si Ai looked at Sun Jack's reaction thoughtfully, "You really don't know anything?"
"Of course I don't know. I don't even know what this is, superpowers? Special abilities?" Sun Jack found that the secrets about himself were increasing.
Si Ai thought for a moment before replying, "I originally thought you achieved it through the internal prosthetic adrenal hormone enhancer and peripheral nerve reinforcement, combined with an injection of Polymer No. 3. But it turns out that's not the case. Your body and blood are clean, with nothing but regular medication."
"Do you know? This is really special. You can actually break through the human threshold with your physical body. In all my years as a doctor, I've never seen anything like this."
"Human threshold? What, can you explain it in more detail?" Sun Jack asked. It was clearly wrong for this to happen to him, even if it saved his life.
"Actually, the physical performance we normally use isn't 100%. Our bodies, to protect us and avoid injury, have a safety line set."
"But sometimes, this safety can be broken through. For example, facing a car that's about to hit her child, before the car hits, a mother can surpass her physical limits to save her child, but the price is ligament tears and muscle dissolution."
"This situation varies greatly from individual to individual. The Treatment Center company has developed projects for this. Experiments show that only about one out of ten mothers can do it."
"Is this the ability I used in the video?" Sun Jack looked down at his hands in surprise.
"Not only do you have this ability, but you can also perfectly combine it with combat skills." Si Ai slid the recorded video in front of him again.
"In fact, according to my observation, you were in an unconscious state at the time. Your combat skills were used instinctively based on Muscle Memory, which proves you have undergone high-intensity training in the past."
"Precise, calm, like a trained killing machine."
"Training...?" Sun Jack recalled his lost five years of memory.
Suddenly, he thought of something and quickly slid the video screen in front of him again, finally stopping at the moment Taipai hugged him. "Hilda!"
"Hilda?" Sun Jack muttered to himself. Who was this Hilda? Why did he call out her name at the same time he broke through his physical threshold?
"I don't know. I lost my memory for five years before." Facing the friendly Si Ai, Sun Jack selectively told part of the truth.
"Lost your memory for five years? Does that mean this ability of yours might have been cultivated within these past five years?" Si Ai propped her chin with her hand, deep in thought.
Sun Jack's attention was no longer on why he possessed such an ability, but on the person named Hilda.
Every time he thought of her, a strange pang of heartache would surface in Sun Jack's chest.
Was this person named Hilda very important to him? Was she waiting for me? Who exactly was she to me?
Sun Jack realized that he had more and more secrets, yet he had no clue about any of them. He didn't know what to look for, or where to start. This feeling was truly awful.
Coupled with his previous ability to break through human limits, a terrifying guess suddenly formed in Sun Jack's mind.
"Fuck me, in the past five years, I wouldn't have been trained into a killing machine, would I?"
As this thought emerged, more corroborating details surfaced in Sun Jack's mind. Firstly, he was able to exchange gunfire with a bunch of desperados right after descending from the sky.
Even stranger was that after killing so many people, he slept exceptionally soundly that night, with absolutely no pressure in his heart.
Although this would be very helpful for someone working as a mercenary, thinking back on it now, the matter itself exuded a sense of strangeness. This was definitely not something a student who had just finished his college entrance exams could do.
"What are your plans now, given your situation?" Si Ai asked.
Sun Jack smiled and shook his head. "What else can I do? Nothing. Forget it, this is my private matter, I'll handle it myself."
Regarding his past, Sun Jack didn't want to say too much to anyone other than Taipai, to avoid exposing his identity.
Si Ai, standing beside him, reached out and patted Sun Jack's shoulder. "There's no need to feel so much pressure. Life is often better when one is a little ignorant. Perhaps that experience was very painful, which is why you deliberately forgot it."
Sun Jack, however, didn't want to be ignorant. He had to figure out what happened during his lost five years of memory, and who exactly that Hilda was, whether male or female. Although he hadn't figured out where to start yet.
"Let's settle the medical fees first."
Si Ai's words instantly shifted Sun Jack's focus from the trouble of his memories to the present. "What? You're charging me for treatment? Aren't we allies? Aren't you the accompanying doctor?"
"Of course. Other routine treatments can be waived out of consideration for us being allies. Don't you see how badly injured you were before? I reattached both your hands. Also, that shot Taipai fired at me is counted against you."
"I have no money," Sun Jack said irritably.
"I know you have no money. Ask that guy Song 6. We succeeded in this commission, so he can give you your promised reward."
"Damn it, everything costs money in this broken place. It's like money can solve all problems."
"Heh, you're actually right. With technology so advanced now, money really can solve all problems." Si Ai sat on the operating table beside him, pulled an electronic cigarette from her ear, and took another puff.
Sun Jack grumbled as he dialed Song 6's number. But while waiting for the call to connect, Sun Jack suddenly froze. He suddenly thought of something and looked at Si Ai beside him with sudden realization.
"Wait, you just said, money can solve all problems?"
"Yes, of course. If money can't solve a problem, it's just because you haven't given enough."
"Does that mean, as long as I have money, my lost memories can be recovered too?"
As his thought moved, his Nervous System quickly organized and listed the projects from various hospitals. All sorts of amnesia repair surgeries were available, with prices ranging from high to low.
At this moment, Sun Jack realized he had completely fallen into the mindset of ancient people. The technological level of the past was completely different from the current one. He didn't need to go through eighty-one tribulations like in TV shows to find his memories.
Right, it's just amnesia. Is that even a big deal in Metropolis?
Money! In Metropolis, as long as he had money, no problem was a problem! Money was the ultimate solution to all problems.
As long as he had the money for surgery to recover his memories, he could directly get answers about his five years of experience or Hilda's identity!
