An utter silence hung in the air, as if only the three of their heartbeats remained.
The three of them met each other's gaze. Chu An remained silent for a long while before slowly speaking:

"I'll prove it to you."
After saying that, Chu An lightly lifted the rim of his glasses and turned his head slightly toward Mo Ling:
"However, I hope this conversation can be between just the two of us."
A minute later.
"Cough, cough."
Only the two of them remained in the deep blue psionic laboratory.
After Mo Ling left, Lin An silently watched Chu An pour himself a glass of water before breaking into an uncontrollable fit of coughing.
They sat facing each other.
He did not know whether Chu An was pretending to show weakness or had truly suffered some kind of injury he could not conceal. Right now, all he wanted was the answer.
If Chu An was a mutant whose goal was to subtly turn him into a monster and then use him to conquer this world, Lin An might as well surrender directly to the mutants.
He had never thought about saving human civilization, nor had he thought about saving any particular number of people.
But Lin An understood one thing very clearly.
If all of humanity disappeared, or was kept in captivity, what difference would that make from destruction? By then, he would be like water without roots and would sooner or later forget his true identity.
Yes, Chu An did not need to harm him at all. He only needed to make Lin An silently accept that he, too, was a monster.
If that happened, what difference would there be between Lin An and a dead man?
