Neville answered instinctively, trying hard to push through the crowd. He stumbled his way to the front of the cabinet.
Professor Lupin smiled at him and said kindly:
"Mr. Longbottom, Professor McGonagall told me you're a very talented boy, but you're usually not very confident."
"So, would you be willing to be the first student to face the Boggart?"
"I... I can!" Neville replied, his face bright red and his words stammering.
"Very good," Professor Lupin said with a nod. "You have the courage to face a challenge. A true Gryffindor!"
"I expect you remember the important points, right?"
At Professor Lupin's words, Neville's face turned even redder.
He nodded hard. "I remember!"
"The spell is Riddikulus... and... and you have to imagine turning the Boggart into... into the thing you find funniest!"
Professor Lupin applauded softly in approval. "It seems you've got the hang of it! In that case, I won't interfere any further."
"Do you have any pets with you? If so, I'd like you to take them out and let me look after them for the time being." Professor Lupin raised his voice.
"The same goes for everyone else. If you have a pet or any living creature with you, please hand it over to me temporarily, so it won't disrupt the lesson."
Neville promptly handed over his precious toad, Trevor, but none of the other students handed over any pets.
Professor Lupin glanced discreetly at Ron, feeling a little disappointed, but carried on with the lesson.
Once Neville nodded to show he was ready, Professor Lupin flicked his wand, and the cabinet doors opened.
At the same time, Professor Lupin took several steps back, moving out of the Boggart's range.
