Biodata
| Feature | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Spirit Master |
| Original Name | 魂师 |
| Alias(es) | Soul Master |
| Classification | Martial Spirit cultivator 10 |
| Requirements | A Martial Spirit and Soul Power; obtaining a first Spirit Ring is necessary to advance formally to Spirit Master 8 10 39 |
| Occupation/Role | Roles include combat, control, healing, and support; some Martial Spirits also serve ordinary professions 18 36 40 43 |
Power Progression
“Spirit Master” is used both broadly for Martial Spirit cultivators and more narrowly for those who have obtained their first Spirit Ring. Further advancement requires another ring at each ten-level threshold 18 23 30 39.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Martial Spirit awakening | 9 10 | Reveals the Martial Spirit and innate Soul Power. Children without Soul Power cannot begin cultivating as Spirit Masters. |
| Spirit Master — first Spirit Ring | 23 33 39 | Acquiring the first ring permits formal advancement. Xiao Chenyu and Tang San are both documented as level-eleven, one-ring Spirit Masters. |
| Soul Grandmaster — level twenty and second Spirit Ring | 18 | Requires both the Soul Power threshold and a second ring; also the graduation requirement for an intermediate academy. |
| Soul Elder / Earth Spirit Master — level thirty and third Spirit Ring | 18 | Requires a third ring. Advanced academy graduation additionally imposes age and Spirit Ring restrictions. |
| Spirit Saint — above level seventy | 40 | Bishop Jie Ke is identified as a Spirit Saint above level seventy. |
| Titled Douluo | 17 18 30 | A rare high rank. Even a one-level difference between Power Attack System Titled Douluos can determine victory. |
Awakening and Aptitude
Martial Spirits
- Awakening: Children ordinarily undergo Martial Spirit awakening around six or seven years old. Su Yuntao conducts the ceremony for Holy Soul Village’s children 9 39.
- Inheritance: Martial Spirits are generally inherited from biological parents. Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls derive from his parents’ inheritance 9 21.
- Soul Power requirement: Possessing a Martial Spirit alone is insufficient. Even a supposedly useless Martial Spirit can support cultivation if its owner has Soul Power 10.
- Quality and aptitude: Grandmaster’s theory links innate Soul Power directly to Martial Spirit quality. He uses the discrepancy between Blue Silver Grass and Tang San’s Innate Full Soul Power to deduce a second Martial Spirit 21.
Innate Soul Power
- Cultivation potential: Higher innate Soul Power indicates greater aptitude and faster cultivation 10.
- Innate Full Soul Power: Conventionally means level-ten Soul Power at awakening and is treated as an exceptionally rare talent 10.
- Acquired exceptions: Tang San reaches this condition through the Mysterious Heaven Skill rather than being born with it. Wang Feng gains his awakening-stage power through extreme training and energy released by the Meteor Tear 11 21.
- Measurement limits: Wang Feng stops feeding energy into the awakening crystal when it begins cracking, concealing more than half his remaining energy 11.
Abilities & Skills
Soul Power Cultivation
Soul Power can be cultivated through meditation, but continued advancement requires Spirit Rings at ten-level bottlenecks 10 30.
- Higher levels require progressively greater amounts of Soul Power; the difference between successive levels grows at higher ranks 30.
- More powerful Martial Spirits can impose heavier Soul Power costs. Wang Feng’s Golden Lotus initially exhausts him after a brief healing demonstration 12.
- Repeated combat and an improved meditation method accelerate Wang Feng’s cultivation 49.
Martial Spirit Possession
Beast Martial Spirits can attach themselves to their users, changing their bodies and strengthening their combat abilities 15 23.
- Xiao Chenyu’s Wolf possession produces green-glowing eyes and sharpened claws 23.
- Su Yuntao’s Lone Wolf possession allows him to drive Wang Feng backward during their spar 15.
- Possession does not replace Soul Skills, which provide a further increase in combat strength 16.
Soul Skills
Soul Skills are a central source of a Spirit Master’s strength and help distinguish different combat roles 16 47.
- Ring-granted skills: Wang Feng’s first Spirit Ring unlocks Divinization, an enhancement skill with an added paralyzing effect 30.
- Beast-derived traits: Tang San’s Datura Snake ring gives his Blue Silver Grass greater resilience and paralyzing venom 35.
- Innate abilities: A Martial Spirit may possess powers before receiving a ring. The Golden Lotus can already heal injuries before Wang Feng obtains his first Soul Skill 12 13.
- Self-created skills: Li Ying develops Cloud Sky Throw himself rather than presenting it as a newly acquired ring skill 47.
Soul Power Compression
Wang Feng uses the Meteor Tear and his unusually strong body to refine Soul Power to twice its density 30.
- Compression changes its quality without increasing its total amount, allowing more sustained skill use 30.
- His initial level-eighteen estimate falls after refinement; Spirit Hall subsequently measures him at level fifteen 30 40.
- Ordinary Spirit Masters cannot withstand the strain. Wang Feng’s method is an exceptional technique, not standard cultivation 30.
- His refined reserves later last longer than those of Soul Elders above level thirty 49.
Spirit Rings
Acquisition and Ownership
- Spirit Masters hunt suitable Soul Beasts and absorb the rings produced after their deaths 21 27.
- Only the person who kills the Soul Beast can absorb its ring. Hunting parties therefore arrange for the intended recipient to deliver the final blow 45 46.
- A ring disappears after an hour if it is not absorbed 46.
- Absorption is dangerous, and an attack during the process can have severe consequences 46.
- Spirit Hall issues entry tokens for the Soul Hunting Forest to cultivators seeking rings at an advancement bottleneck; obtaining a token can require someone to vouch for the applicant 25.
Documented Ring Grades
| Ring age | Color | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Ten-year | White | Xiao Chenyu’s first ring 23 |
| Hundred-year | Yellow | Tang San’s Datura Snake ring; the eight-hundred-year Thorn Purple Spirit Vine produces a deep yellow ring 33 46 |
| Thousand-year | Purple | Wang Feng’s six-thousand-year Golden Light Thunder Leopard ring 28 38 |
Suitability and Absorption Limits
- Older rings provide greater improvements, but compatibility matters more than age alone when selecting a useful ring 34 35.
- Grandmaster’s estimated first-ring limit is 423 years. His research normally places thousand-year rings at the third-ring stage 38.
- Wang Feng’s six-thousand-year first ring is an extreme exception. Its energy destroys his body during absorption; the Meteor Tear restores him, while the Green Lotus and a mysterious consciousness-born figure help him survive 28.
- Defeating a Soul Beast does not establish that its ring is safe to absorb. Wang Feng acknowledges that even doubling his physical constitution would not ordinarily let him withstand that ring 28.
Types and Team Roles
Martial Spirit form and battlefield function are distinct classifications: Wang Feng introduces himself as an Auxiliary Tool Soul Spirit Master, while Tang San is a Tool Soul Spirit Master who fights through control 33 36 37.
| Role | Function | Documented examples |
|---|---|---|
| Attack | Directly damages opponents | Xiao Wu’s close combat; Ling Ren’s dagger attacks 36 44 |
| Defense | Absorbs attacks and protects teammates | Old Hei’s Black Rock Bear provides outstanding defense but limited speed 44 47 |
| Control | Restrains opponents or disrupts their actions | Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass; Si Rong’s Iron Tooth Grass 35 44 |
| Recovery | Restores Soul Power or heals injuries | Wang Feng’s Golden Lotus 38 44 |
| Support | Enhances allies’ attributes and effectiveness | Wang Feng’s Divinization 30 31 |
| Scouting | Uses mobility to gather information | Li Ying’s fast Cangying Martial Spirit is suited to scouting 46 |
- Coordinated roles can produce strength greater than the sum of individual fighters. Tang San’s control and Xiao Wu’s attacks are described as an especially effective pairing 36.
- Support effectiveness can decline against much stronger targets. Wang Feng finds that Divinization’s enhancement weakens on the Star-Moon Fox, although its paralysis remains effective 31.
- Auxiliary Spirit Masters generally avoid direct combat but still undertake basic physical training. Wang Feng’s exceptional strength surprises both allies and opponents 46 47.
Education
| Academy tier | Curriculum or graduation requirement |
|---|---|
| Junior / Primary | Six-year course covering continental culture and history, Martial Spirits, and basic Soul Beast knowledge 18 |
| Intermediate | Level twenty and a second Spirit Ring, earning the Soul Grandmaster title 18 |
| Advanced | Level thirty and a third Spirit Ring, with additional age and ring restrictions; Old Jack estimates that only one-quarter to one-third of entrants graduate 18 |
Academy instructors can help students obtain their first rings. Old Jack warns that later hunts demand greater independence, while noble children benefit from family warriors who make obtaining rings safer 18.
Spirit Hall and Certification
- Awakening: Spirit Hall personnel conduct village ceremonies and issue certificates recording Martial Spirits and innate Soul Power 9 20.
- Formal certification: Applicants reveal their Martial Spirit and Spirit Ring and undergo a Soul Power test 39 40.
- Level reassessment: A level-only check does not require revealing Spirit Rings, unlike an assessment for advancement to a higher rank 49.
- Recruitment: Joining Spirit Hall makes a cultivator one of its exclusive Spirit Masters and entails attending its academies for systematic training 40.
- High-rank recognition: Only cultivators who attain the Douluo level qualify to enter the Douluo Consecrated Hall, described by Ma Xiunuo as an aspiration shared by Spirit Masters 40.
Hunting and Professional Life
- Paid teams: Hunters recruit by level and role. One group offers fifty Silver Soul Coins for a control-type Spirit Master around level twenty-five 43.
- Unequal resources: Commoners risk injury or death while obtaining rings; family wealth and powerful affiliations provide safer hunts and better access to advancement 18.
- Conservation practices: Si Rong’s team usually disables unsuitable Soul Beasts rather than killing them and wasting their rings. Ling Ren notes that other hunters kill regardless of need 45.
- Ring theft: Delivering the final blow to another party’s quarry can deprive its intended recipient of the ring. Li Ying does this to Si Rong’s team after they subdue a suitable vine 45 46.
- Fatigue beyond Soul Power: Recovery abilities do not eliminate every cost of prolonged hunting. Si Rong’s team becomes mentally fatigued despite repeated Soul Power restoration 45.
