Background / History

Jian Tongming is a descendant of the Seven Kill Sword line of the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect and the grandson of Jian Donglai, the sect's Peerless Sword God. Despite this heritage, he considered himself mediocre and carried the pressure of a once-glorious lineage that had declined in his generation. He was studying at Shrek Academy when Jiang Siming rescued him from a soul beast. 239 240 251 453 454

Jiang Siming chose Jian as his disciple despite his unremarkable aptitude. His first teachings rejected the usual emphasis on Soul Power and soul rings: Jian was told to find why he wielded a sword, to swing it ten thousand times each day, and to temper an unbreakable will. Jian answered that he sought strength comparable to his ancestor's. 240 241 242

Jiang later gave him a black bead that resonated with the Seven Kill Sword and strengthened its sword energy. He also taught Jian to recognize others' strengths without becoming obsessed with surpassing everyone, encouraging him to pursue his own Sword Dao rather than imitate his master's many paths. 250 251 252
