Another Two Days

Two days later.

Jonathan went to Black Phoenix City to collect his payment from Xue Yan.

Xue Yan gave him a Magic Crystal Card. It had been issued by a bank jointly established by the Four Great Empires, and the transaction fee alone was one hundred gold coins.

"With this Magic Crystal Card, you won't have to carry around large sums of gold anymore. I'll transfer your future mission payments to this card, too."

As he spoke, he began asking Jonathan about his trip to the Magical Beast Mountain Range.

"Training really does help improve your combat experience. I should be able to break through to Eighth-level Warrior before the end of the year."

"Then I'll get to see Old Instructor soon!"

Jonathan rolled his eyes. "What's that got to do with you?"

"By the way, I've got another mission. The Bred Family posted it. The target is their business rival, the head of the Rot Family, Cland Rot."

"The Rot Family is one of the faster-rising noble houses in the Bandas Kingdom in recent years. They hold an earl's title."

At the mention of the Bred Family, Jonathan raised an eyebrow and chuckled. "I heard they're a marquis family. They can't even outcompete an earl? What a bunch of losers."

"That has nothing to do with us. We just do the job and take the money."

"You should take this mission. To have Cland killed, they're offering a reward of two hundred thousand gold coins."

"From what I've found, Cland is an early seventh-level warrior, and he always has a peak seventh-level bodyguard with him. I've also tracked down his recent movements. If you take the job, I'll give you the itinerary."

Jonathan considered it for a moment. "Tell the Bred Family to double the reward, and I'll take it."

Xue Yan figured that wouldn't be a problem and handed Jonathan the relevant information.

After looking through the information Xue Yan had gathered, Jonathan already had a plan.

Five days later, Duke Hanna would host a banquet. The Bred Family, the Rot Family, and most of Black Phoenix City's prominent nobles would be there.

He decided to make his move after the banquet that night.

"If there's nothing else, I'll get going."

"Sure. Go ahead. Remember to reach seventh level soon, so I can let Old Instructor know!"

Jonathan left without looking back, speechless.

Cross came over to Xue Yan. "Sir, this mission's no small challenge. You're really handing it to him just like that? Aren't you worried something might happen to him?"

"Sometimes people need a push to bring out their potential. Besides, at his speed, unless his opponent is eighth level or above, no guard from the Rot Family could catch him if he tried to flee."

Five days later.

The Hanna estate blazed with light as one noble after another streamed into the manor in Black Phoenix City.

These banquets were usually just a chance to drink and strengthen relationships. There wasn't much else to them.

Duke Hanna's study.

"Canina, you promised to send your younger sister to me. Where is she? I still haven't seen hide nor hair of her!"

"If things stand like this, how can I trust you with the Water Jade Ore Vein?"

"Plenty of families want that mining business!"

"Yes, yes. Don't worry, Duke Hanna. I've already sent my son out. He got word of her last time, so she may already be on her way back to the city."

"If she isn't back in the next few days, I'll go find her myself. I'll make sure to bring her to your estate."

"That's more like it. All right, we should head out. If we stay away too long, people will get suspicious."

The Water Jade Ore Vein brought in tens of millions of gold coins in total profit. It was a massive prize. Even after handing over thirty percent to the royal family, the rest would be enough to help a family grow rapidly.

The one currently in charge of the Water Jade Ore Vein was the current king's younger brother, Hanna Bandas.

Ever since the news broke, nobles had often visited Duke Hanna's estate, with the Bred Family showing up more frequently than anyone else.

Duke Hanna had accepted plenty of bribes over the past few days, waiting to see who would offer the best price.

A little over an hour later.

The banquet ended, and the nobles began heading home.

Jonathan picked his target and began the assassination, starting with Cland Rot's ordinary guards: five sixth-level warriors.

He didn't even need to sneak up on them. He was as fast as Lightning Flash, and they couldn't even make out his figure. In the blink of an eye, all five had fallen.

The other nobles and guards traveling with the Rot Family were alarmed. They shielded their masters and hurried away from the fight.

Cland's peak seventh-level bodyguard rushed forward. His speed nearly matched Jonathan's, and he wielded a rapier.

As he swung it, dozens of silver-white streaks of sword light swept toward Jonathan.

Jonathan immediately realized the man was formidable. He was a top fighter among peak seventh-level warriors, nearly an eighth-level warrior.

He cursed inwardly. That damned Xue Yan deliberately left this out!

He leaped into the air and disappeared into the night.

Then a cloud of black mist swept in, shrouding Cland's carriage and his bodyguard.

Next came a sixth-level Gravity Spell, followed by an Anti-Gravity Spell cast on himself.

One force increased his speed while the other slowed his opponent. In an instant, he was far faster than the bodyguard.

Speed was everything!

Jonathan couldn't match him in strength alone, so he launched his assassination in the blurry darkness of the mist.

A lightning-fast, silent kill.

After just a dozen breaths, the peak seventh-level bodyguard could hold on no longer and crashed to the ground.

Jonathan approached Cland. He heard him say, "If even Barre couldn't stop you, then I suppose I'm doomed to die today. I want to know who sent you to assassinate me."

As an assassin, Jonathan should have said nothing, but he wasn't really an assassin.

He had joined Saber only to have shelter while he was weak.

"You should already know who it is. Who's your biggest rival for the Water Jade Ore Vein?"

"I understand!"

Then he unleashed his full strength. His massive fighting spirit shattered the carriage, and he charged toward Duke Hanna's estate.

"Bred, you actually hired an assassin to kill me! What a wicked heart you have!"

As soon as the words left his mouth, Jonathan killed him. His body fell at the entrance to Duke Hanna's estate.

Many nobles saw and heard what happened, including Canina and Hanna.

Duke Hanna glared at Canina, his face dark with rage.

"Capture that assassin!"

Jonathan leaped away and soon vanished into the night without a sound. They had no idea where to pursue him, and before long, they returned to the duke's estate.

The next day, the incident caused an uproar. Even King Prell was furious when he heard about it and summoned Hanna and Canina to the palace for questioning.

Canina naturally denied it, claiming the matter had nothing to do with him and that Cland had tried to drag him down with him before dying.

With no evidence, the king couldn't imprison a noble family head who held a marquis title without cause, so he had no choice but to let him go.

Not long after returning home, Bred went to Saber and gave them an earful, declaring that he would pay only the original reward.

Xue Yan called Jonathan in and gave him an earful, too.

"What's wrong with you? How could you let Cland get a chance to speak?"

Jonathan didn't care. "I don't know the Silence Spell. What was I supposed to do if he wanted to talk?"

"Then why did you choose a spot so close to Duke Hanna's estate?"

"I took the mission. Where I choose to do it is my business. Anyway, the job's done. Transfer the agreed payment to my card."

Xue Yan's face darkened. "The client said you turned the blame onto him. He'll pay you only the original two hundred thousand. Forget about four hundred thousand!"

"Then go ask him for it yourself!"

"I'll ask him myself, then. No one gets to swallow what's mine so easily!"

A cold glint flashed in Jonathan's eyes. After leaving, he went straight to the Bred Family estate that very night.
