When Duncan brought Alice to the lab on the top floor of Stark Tower, he found himself looking at a rather comical scene.
Natasha, Banner, Hill, Steve, and Dr. Helen Cho sat in a row on the couch, grinning as they watched Tony get lectured by Pepper. Beside them, an Iron Legion robot hung its head like a withered flower.
"What happened here???"
Duncan had been ready to jump into the fray and fight the robot himself. He'd even been looking forward to it a little. But from the looks of things, there wasn't going to be a fight.
"Thank goodness!" Tony's face clearly relaxed at the sight of someone else. He pointed at the robot beside him. "You can take it away. I don't want to see it!"
The robot raised its head and looked at Tony. Its electronic eyes were expressionless, but its tone was full of mockery. "Oh, you've broken my heart. I have a soul and emotions, so I'm perfectly entitled to say that. What an incompetent parent!"
"You deal with this. I'm going home!"
Maybe she'd already said all she had to say before Duncan arrived. Pepper gave Tony one last glare, then left with a final, furious remark.
Pepper's departure, brimming with resentment, left Tony looking as though he'd just bitten into a raw, bitter melon.
The robot watched Pepper's retreating back, crossed its arms, and shook its head with a sigh. "The diversity of humanity is astonishing. Some people transcend themselves, while others remain trapped in a narrow space."
