The sound grew closer, and as the splashing of water approached, both girls clearly felt the water dripping from the ceiling speed up.
The sound of children giggling that had been ringing in their ears vanished, replaced by shrill screams.
Yukino felt as if her eardrums were about to burst; the piercing noise left her feeling delirious. Coupled with the distinct sensation of the bedsheet being soaked through, the two of them were now trapped in a dilemma.
Rip!
Something attacked the bedsheet covering them. The moment it was torn apart, Yukino hurriedly pulled Yuigahama Yui along to hide in another room.
Because the environment was pitch black, Yukino had no idea what kind of place she had broken into until Yuigahama Yui turned on her phone's flashlight, at which point she realized what a grave mistake she had made.
Both girls tightly covered their mouths, subconsciously softening their breathing; neither of them wanted to be bitten by the creature before them.
Inside the room, aside from the two girls who were too nervous to move, there was a canine creature tethered by iron chains.
This creature was similar in size to a human. If they were bitten, setting aside whether they could withstand its gaping maw, the sheer amount of bacteria in its mouth alone would be lethal.
Yukino reached out, wanting to cover Yuigahama Yui's phone, fearing that the light would wake the canine monster.
But before she could reach the phone, a thumping sound came from the door behind them. The way the sound grew louder signaled that the thing outside was not coming with good intentions.
"What do we do, Xiaoxue? This thing looks like it's about to wake up..."
Yuigahama Yui was panicked. She only kept small dogs and had never seen a canine this large, but she certainly didn't want to become the first meal for this giant dog.
Yukino stared at the sleeping vicious dog in front of her. The creature's brow twitched in rhythm with the knocking on the door; every time the door thudded, it furrowed its brow.
Yukino knew that sitting ducks were just waiting for death, so she prepared to take the initiative.
"The one outside is the male corpse from Room 102. He must be here for this knife." With that, Yukino waved the scalpel at Tuanzi. "Therefore, I need your help."
"I understand. What exactly do you need me to do?"
"Open the door!"
"Huh? Are we giving the knife back to him? No, no! With this knife, we at least have the strength to resist. Once he takes it back, we'll truly have nothing left."
Yuigahama Yui couldn't help but warn her. From her perspective, she truly thought Yukino intended to hand over the weapon, so she hurriedly urged her not to do anything foolish.
"Do you think I'm that stupid?"
Yukino was speechless, but now was not the time to dwell on such things.
"Trust me, just as I trust you."
Looking at Yukino's firm gaze, Yuigahama Yui swallowed the words she had been about to say.
"Are you ready?"
After saying this, Yukino tightened her grip on the scalpel.
"Yeah!"
The two girls exchanged a look. Yuigahama Yui threw the door open, and Yukino took the opportunity to stab the scalpel fiercely into the sleeping beast.
Squelch!
"Run!"
As the scalpel pierced in, a chilling gaze slowly opened. Yukino and Yuigahama Yui seized the chance to bolt, leaving the scalpel still embedded in the beast's eyeball.
"Awoooo!!!"
Due to its size, the spot Yukino had aimed for was exactly the beast's eye. The piercing pain radiating from the eye caused the beast to wake up instantly.
The pain in its eye made the beast furious, and at that moment, its remaining eye caught sight of the male corpse standing before it.
Because Yukino and Yuigahama Yui had run out, and the scalpel was stuck in the beast's eye, the male corpse did not choose to chase them. Instead, it slowly walked up to the beast... and reached out...
Squelch!
The male corpse pulled the scalpel directly out of the beast's eye. The sensation of the wounded area being struck again caused the beast unbearable agony.
Although it couldn't speak, it would use its actions to brutally beat this "benefactor" who had just treated its eye ailment!
The beast tackled the male corpse to the ground, biting frantically. The stinging pain in its eye continued, and every surge of pain only made the beast bite down even harder...
"Huff, huff, huff... we should be safe hiding here, right?"
Yuigahama Yui and Yukino were panting heavily in the hallway, now a fair distance away from the room they had just fled.
"He shouldn't be able to catch up. I think we should find a room to rest; we need to plan our escape carefully. We only have one chance, and now we can only move forward—there's no turning back."
"Yeah! You're right, we definitely need to come up with a detailed plan."
Yuigahama Yui agreed. At that moment, both of them silently prayed, hoping to find a place to stay for the time being.
Suddenly, their vision shifted. Aside from the path they had used to escape, which remained its original color, the other rooms had transformed into three different colors: red, yellow, and green.
"Hmm, there are three colors. Which one should we choose?"
"I just looked at the room we escaped from; it was red. That means the red rooms carry a certain level of danger. As for the remaining yellow and green ones... I'm not sure."
"However, all the rooms along this path, except for that one, were yellow. That means we also came out of a yellow room. Doesn't that imply that the yellow rooms are relatively safer?"
At the critical moment, Yuigahama Yui offered her hypothesis, and Yukino nodded in agreement.
"That does make sense. There's a Yellow Gate right next to us, and the green one is too far away. It wouldn't be good if we got dripped on by the water from the ceiling on the way there."
Therefore, while it seemed like there were three choices, in reality, the two of them only had one.
"Let's go!"
Yukino took a deep breath and pushed open the Yellow Gate.
To Yukino's surprise, the lights inside were actually on. This not only made her heighten her vigilance, but since the previous rooms had all been pitch black, this was the only room with light, which suggested two possibilities.
One: The lights were influenced by the supernatural, and the darker the room, the higher the probability of a supernatural entity existing.
Two: Something was living in this room...
"Eh! Yukino, come look at this, there's a photo here!"
Yuigahama Yui had discovered a clear photograph on a table to the side. It contained many people with various expressions on their faces, and standing in the center was a young man who looked somewhat haggard, much like a corporate slave working a 996 schedule.
"This person gives me a sense of familiarity." Yuigahama Yui flipped the photo over. Some photos had the names of the people in them written on the back, and Yuigahama Yui prepared to start from there to see if she could find any clues about the people in the picture.
As a result, the very first name that met her eyes made Yuigahama Yui freeze.
It was written there...
