The young man looked utterly dead inside. Leaning against the lectern behind him, he took a long while before speaking again.
"My name is Luokai, a Level 2 Apprentice. Come up and collect the manuals yourselves. Read them for ten minutes first."
Even his voice had become weak and lifeless.
But several eager boys and girls quickly stepped forward to help distribute the manuals.
Once his hands were free, Luokai recited an incomprehensible Curse-Spell and made two gestures.
With a swish, the mess on the floor vanished.
Having already witnessed Sid kill the fat boy, the new Apprentices were not overly alarmed by Luokai's spell.
That left Luokai, who had wanted to show off a little, looking even more dispirited.
The two boys sitting to Keli's left also got up to collect the forms and brought back copies for Keli and Thor along the way.
Keli accepted hers naturally, while Thor thanked them.
"No need, no need." The big-eyed boy looked a little surprised. "My name is Duoze, and he's Luoji. We live in rooms 613 and 614. We can study and discuss things together from now on."
If this had been an ordinary school, it would have been a good chance to make friends.
But Thor did not think that, as Wizard Apprentices, they would be able to study together. After all, their primary elements and mentors would likely be different.
He lowered his head to look at the form in his hand.
There were only five mentors in total. This was everyone at Gorsa Wizard Tower. Each mentor's name had a brief introduction behind it, listing their primary elements and areas of expertise.
These mentors generally had one or two primary elements, while their areas of expertise were much broader.
The first name Thor noticed was Mentor Gudo's. Right next to Gudo's name was Mentor Kazi.
Kazi. Primary element: Dark Element. Areas of expertise: necromancy, ghost research, Corpse preservation, limb grafting.
Those were all fields from the underworld.
Thor thought of Kongsha's terrifying face again. He obediently checked the box beneath Mentor Kazi's name.
Afterward, he took out the manual and skimmed through it. The detailed rules inside were far more numerous than what Gudo had explained.
Even when he had been a servant, he had not faced so many rules.
Then again, perhaps servants encountered limited things and did not need to know so much.
At that moment, Thor noticed from the corner of his eye that Keli's brows were tightly furrowed and she was biting the casing of her fountain pen.
She seemed not to have moved for a long time.
"What's wrong?"
Had Keli discovered some hidden information?
Keli took the pen casing from her mouth, turned, and said seriously to Thor, "The element I have the strongest affinity for is fire, but none of the mentors specialize in it."
Before Thor could speak, she lowered her head to look at the form again.
"So I can only choose metal as my primary element? Damn it, I'm really unwilling to accept that."
As Keli said this, her furrowed brows had already relaxed. It was impossible to tell how much of her reluctance was genuine.
This Wizard Tower was not a proper school. There were only five mentors, so it was normal that they could not cover every primary element.
Just like Thor's Dark Element—only Mentor Kazi specialized in it.
At that thought, Thor's expression turned grave.
Wait, how did Kongsha determine that Dark Element was the element I had the strongest affinity for?
Was it all a coincidence, or was it arranged by someone?
Thor stared at Kazi's name, his brows slowly drawing together.
Luokai on the stage finally recovered from the blow. He straightened up and asked everyone pleasantly.
"If you have any questions, you can ask me now."
Someone quickly raised a hand.
Some asked about matters in the Rule Manual, while others had run into the same problem as Keli.
Just as Thor had expected, if there was no corresponding mentor, an Apprentice could only choose the element with their second-highest affinity as their primary element.
Those even less fortunate might have to choose their third or fourth.
Luokai patiently explained for half an hour. He was very detailed, even somewhat long-winded, but he made every answer clear.
Even when he could not answer a question, he would explain what everyone needed to watch out for.
Even Thor became absorbed in listening, temporarily forgetting the hidden danger posed by Kongsha.
Suddenly, Thor felt someone poke his arm. He turned his head and saw that Keli had just withdrawn her finger, signaling with her eyes for Thor to look toward the front right.
Thor looked up and discovered that the boy who had stood in front of him during the Apprentice test and turned around to glare at him was still staring at him with resentful eyes.
When the other boy saw Thor look up, he gave him a deep look before turning away.
"Who is he?" Thor leaned left and asked quietly.
Keli remained seated perfectly straight.
"Duke. His best friend died on the way here. The Level 3 Wizard Apprentice leading them stood by and did nothing."
"What does that have to do with me?"
"At the time, that Level 3 Wizard Apprentice said, 'There are too many people.'"
Because there were too many people, the Wizard Apprentice had allowed those participating in the test to die on the road.
Yet during the test, several more people had inexplicably appeared.
Thor silently turned back. After a moment, he said, "It has nothing to do with me."
"Ha!"
Keli gave a short laugh. It was impossible to tell who she was laughing at.
The two continued listening to Luokai's explanation onstage. Neither mentioned Duke again.
"...In short, as long as you devote most of your energy to learning the basics, you won't need to worry about failing the test at all."
Luokai brought his hands together and gave his final summary.
"All right, my mouth is dry from talking. That concludes this explanation. Have you all filled out your forms?"
He cleared his throat.
"Before I collect the forms, let me introduce my mentor one last time: Anze. Yes, the first mentor on your forms. His introduction says he specializes in earth-element spells and can also teach wood-element spells. But in truth, my teacher has also researched water and poison elements."
Luokai smiled. "You don't need to worry if it isn't your primary element. After all, mentors are all Official Wizards. They do not need to distinguish between primary elements to teach you. Even if you're a dark-element Apprentice, choosing Mentor Anze would be absolutely fine. Besides, you have a whole group of Seniors like us to assist and guide you."
"In short, you are all very welcome to join Mentor Anze's big team!"
Luokai bared his teeth, waggled his eyebrows, and looked exceptionally friendly.
"Scratch, scratch, scratch."
Thor noticed that several people immediately began altering their application forms.
Even Duoze and Luoji, sitting on Keli's other side, were making changes.
Duoze even suggested to Thor and Keli, "Why don't we choose Mentor Anze together? Look how enthusiastic Senior Luokai is. He'll definitely be willing to guide our studies, and we'll improve faster that way."
"No!" Keli rejected him without a second thought.
Thor shook his head as well.
These Apprentices had all been brought in from the outside world. They might still hold illusions about the people in the Wizard Tower.
In Thor's impression, these Wizard Apprentices and Wizards were always rushing about. They would not stop for insignificant matters.
If one day they stopped in front of you, do not be happy. It meant they might have a use for you.
As for how they would use you?
Thor's skeletal left hand constantly reminded him that those without strength or value had only their bodies to sell.
The kind of situation where nine chances out of ten meant death—or perhaps ten out of ten.
Luokai finally finished promoting his mentor and told everyone to bring their forms up.
Duoze tried to help Keli and Thor hand in their forms again.
But this time, both chose to deliver them themselves.
Thor glanced at Keli's form from the corner of his eye and was surprised to discover that Keli had chosen Mentor Gudo, who had arrived late and left early.
After all, judging by Mentor Gudo's earlier "Bleurgh," choosing him truly required a great deal of courage.
After collecting the forms, Luokai told everyone they could return to their dormitories first. Servants would deliver all the necessary supplies.
Everyone excitedly bade their Senior farewell and headed back.
The large classroom on the tenth floor soon became empty and quiet.
Luokai sorted through the forms in his hands and placed them in a neat stack on the lectern.
"Hee hee hee..."
He suddenly laughed.
