Background / History
Establishment of the Golden Law
The Greater Will arrived in the Lands Between, established its laws, and planted the Erdtree. Through the Golden Law, it bound death: those who died returned to the Erdtree, where portions of their Runes, souls, and bodies were lost to fuel the Greater Will's power. 166 179 222
Marika was made its spokesperson, while Radagon—Marika's outer body—was controlled to repair the Elden Ring after Marika discovered the Greater Will's scheme and shattered it. The Greater Will's actual objective was not the preservation of any particular law, but the continued extraction of power from the Lands Between. 32 179
Search for a New Lord
After Marika's rebellion and the failure of its descendants to become suitable rulers, the Greater Will turned to Tarnished from outside the Lands Between. It selected and cultivated Lin Luo as a prospective Elden Lord and puppet capable of restoring its control. 33 98
Lin Luo instead recognized the cycle after experiencing it thousands of times. In his final confrontation of the old cycle, he rejected the Greater Will's offer to repair the Golden Law, resisted its lightning, and used Destined Death to destroy Marika's statue, ending that iteration. 1
Rule Through Proxies
For much of the story, the Greater Will's true body remained beyond the stars and under seal. It controlled the Lands Between through the Two Fingers, with individual Fingers representing and controlling demigods. 27
Its influence extended to mental manipulation, including attempts to control Lin Luo and compel Blaidd to kill Ranni. Ranni escaped by killing both her body and the Two Fingers assigned to her. 27 84
Final Defeat
After the Erdtree burned, the Greater Will awakened in its true form: a colossal Black Dragon coiled around the Lands Between and surrounding continents, with the Erdtree's roots connected to its tail. 168
When Lin Luo released the Death Rune and entered the Erdtree, he blocked the Greater Will's perception of its inner space, defeated Radagon and the Elden Beast, then confronted the Black Dragon directly. Lin Luo froze it with the Time-Space Deity's power, turned its own purple attack against it, restrained its divine power with Sir Gideon Ofnir's golden book, and pierced it with the God of War's spear. 224 225 226
Appearance
The Greater Will's true form is an immense, wingless Black Dragon with a serpent-like, hornless head. Its body is vast enough to encircle the Lands Between and nearby barren continents. 168 224
- Black scales marked by spreading golden Runes during combat. 225
- Enormous maw used to devour targets and their accumulated power. 226
- Purple energy gathers in its mouth and chest before its strongest attacks. 225
- Its tail is physically linked to the roots of the Erdtree. 168
Personality
The Greater Will is controlling, arrogant, and dismissive of mortals, routinely calling Lin Luo an “ant” while assuming its superior power makes defeat impossible. It regards lesser gods as insignificant and treats the Lands Between as a resource to be harvested. 1 168 222
It is also calculating. Rather than acting openly while constrained by its seals, it relies on spokespeople, the Two Fingers, selected Elden Lords, and later the Stars as contingencies against Lin Luo. 27 211
Its composure deteriorates as Lin Luo repeatedly survives its plans, absorbs divine powers, and defeats Chaos Frenzied Flame. By the final battle, it panics when its absorption instinct and divine power are turned against it. 174 226
Abilities & Skills
Golden Law and Erdtree Harvesting
The Greater Will created the Golden Law to bind death and route the power of repeated rebirth through the Erdtree into itself. 179 222
- Uses the Erdtree as the conduit for souls, Runes, and life force. 179
- Benefits from the gradual weakening of people repeatedly restored by the Erdtree. 222
- Its connection to the Erdtree makes it difficult to confront directly while the Thorn of Oblivion remains sealed. 174
Control Through the Two Fingers
The Greater Will governs most of the Lands Between through the Two Fingers rather than direct physical intervention. 27
- Each documented Two Fingers corresponds to a demigod under its influence. 27
- Can exert mental pressure and attempt to control a target's actions or consciousness. 27 84
- Used Radagon as a controlled spokesperson for the Golden Law. 32
- Its control can be resisted through measures such as Deathroot, crystallized mirrors, Miquella's Needle, or the death of the relevant Two Fingers. 27 84
Draconic Divine Power
In its Black Dragon form, the Greater Will possesses overwhelming physical strength, speed, durability, and Rune reserves. 225 226
- Fires blood-red lightning and golden meteor barrages. 1
- Projects a purple laser capable of cutting through clouds, vaporizing rain, and threatening the Consecrated Snowfield. 225
- Forms a massive purple orb attack that can devastate the Royal Capital and surrounding spaces. 225 226
- Can rapidly charge despite its enormous body. 226
Devouring Instinct
The Greater Will seeks to devour powerful beings and absorb the powers they possess, mirroring the World-Devouring Serpent's approach on a vastly greater scale. 224 226
- Attempted to consume Lin Luo and reclaim the divine powers he had gathered. 226
- Its instinctive absorption became a fatal weakness when Lin Luo used the Time-Space Deity's power to force the Greater Will to take in a lethal attack. 226
Strategic Manipulation
The Greater Will deploys other forces to weaken threats before acting itself. 95 211
- Warned Chaos Frenzied Flame that Lin Luo had become too dangerous to confront carelessly. 95
- Used the Stars as a contingency after Lin Luo fought the Time-Space Deity, expecting the encounter to leave him vulnerable. 211
- Abandoned Maliketh when it determined that the power supplied to him would not be enough to defeat Lin Luo. 221
Limitations
- Its true body was restricted outside the Lands Between for much of the story, forcing it to operate through the Two Fingers and other proxies. 27
- The Thorn of Oblivion and the Golden Law constrained the release of its avatars and power while the Death Rune remained sealed. 174
- Runes of Death could block its perception of the Erdtree's inner space and inflict pain upon contact. 224
- Sir Gideon Ofnir's golden book could temporarily suppress its control over the divine power within its body. 226
- Its knowledge of Lin Luo's acquired abilities was incomplete, causing it to underestimate the Time-Space Deity's power, the Elemental Body, and the God of War's inheritance. 226
Relationships
- Lin Luo / Miquella — Intended puppet and eventual mortal enemy. The Greater Will cultivated Lin Luo as a replacement Elden Lord, but Lin Luo broke free from its cycles and ultimately destroyed it. 33 98 226
- Marika — Former spokesperson who discovered its conspiracy and shattered the Elden Ring in an attempt to oppose it. 179 222
- Radagon — Marika's outer body and the Greater Will's controlled spokesperson for restoring the Golden Law. 32 224
- Two Fingers — Messengers and instruments through which it controlled demigods and much of the Lands Between. 27
- Elden Beast — A mass of the Greater Will's power within the Erdtree; its defeat provoked the Greater Will into direct action. 224 225
- Maliketh — Devoted servant who remained loyal even after the Greater Will cut off its power and abandoned him. 221
- Chaos Frenzied Flame — Rival deity it barred from entering the Lands Between, judging Chaos too weak to challenge Lin Luo safely. 95
- Sun God — A deity whose power the Greater Will weakened before the Golden Lineage sealed him within the last Giant. 166
- The Stars — A pantheon used as a contingency force against Lin Luo after the Time-Space Deity's defeat. 210 211
