Ch. 821Dealing with It
Key plot points and events
- Mr. Wichai realizes the warning about the authorities may be a trap and orders his men to prepare an escape, taking valuables and gold from the vault.
- Zhou You reveals that the apparent young man they killed was a Paper Effigy, then identifies himself as the White Gate’s senior disciple and leader of the Nine Streams’ Demon-Slaying Allied Army.
- Wichai’s men attack. Zhou You easily defeats them, countering their sect techniques and killing several. The survivors suddenly melt together into a many-limbed monster, which he destroys with Duanxie.
- Suspecting something is wrong, Zhou You contacts the snake demon. They discover that most of the vault’s bearer bonds and valuable antiques have already been removed, while decoy bonds were left behind.
- Zhou You concludes that Wichai was not the true mastermind and believes he has identified who was.
- Elsewhere, a convoy carrying an unnamed elderly “master” struggles toward the border in heavy rain. The group hopes to escape once across, but the vehicles abruptly stop.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhou You remains composed and confident under attack, using his knowledge of the Nine Streams’ techniques to expose the attackers as inferior imitations. His focus shifts from defeating Wichai to investigating the larger scheme once he notices the missing assets and the monster’s strange faces.
- Mr. Wichai shifts from bluster to cold calculation, then orders his men to attack when Zhou You appears. His apparent importance is undercut by the discovery that someone else likely moved the group’s most valuable assets.
- The snake demon acts as Zhou You’s informant through her control of a senior officer. She helps confirm that the vault has been deliberately stripped of its most valuable assets.
- The fleeing master and Master Zhao are introduced as likely connected to the missing assets. Zhao is frustrated by the poor road and corruption, while the old master urges patience—until the convoy is halted.
Significant themes
- Appearances and deception: The dead “young man” is a disguise, the bonds are mostly blank paper, and Wichai’s apparent leadership may be another misdirection.
- Imitation versus genuine mastery: Zhou You dismisses the attackers’ borrowed techniques as crude counterfeits that cannot match the real Nine Streams.
- Power and corruption: The group’s influence and wealth coexist with bribery, misused public funds, and an attempted escape across the border.
- A larger conspiracy: The vault battle resolves the immediate threat but reveals that the real operation—and its mastermind—remains hidden.
