Ch. 921Seats

Key plot points and events

  • In a tense moonlit meeting, Li Zhengfa asks Zhou You to win first place in the upcoming Tianyuan Conference and earn the right to meet an immortal. He says their ultimate goals are aligned but refuses to explain further.
  • Zhou You points out the danger of the chaotic, many-competitor contest and demands payment. Li gives him the Dragon-Subduing Seal, a powerful red-grade artifact that can dispel spells, copy them for later use, resist their sources, and protect against illusions and mental confusion.
  • Zhou asks what Li will do if he loses and what Li expects afterward. Li says Zhou may keep the seal regardless, but postpones any explanation of the larger plan until after the next round.
  • The chapter briefly reports several developments in the first round: Fairy Moonlight leads the Mirror Flower Sect to victory; mysterious assassins kill several prominent fighters; and the Return to One Way defeats the powerful Heaven-Law Abbey, reportedly using spells with traces of the Esoteric Sect.
  • As the second round begins, Zhou arrives with Chen Luo, Wang Chongming, and Lin Yunshao. The crowd parts for him and leaves him an open table, showing that he is now widely accepted as the equal of the Thirty-Six Sects’ leaders.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhou You remains cautious and pragmatic. He presses Li for answers, insists on compensation, and recognizes the strategic value of the seal without showing his surprise. His growing public status is also clear: unlike earlier appearances, he now faces no open doubt or contempt.
  • Li Zhengfa reveals little about his intentions, but demonstrates trust in Zhou by giving him a rare artifact. He also controls his bodyguard with a simple gesture, preventing the tense encounter from becoming a fight.
  • Li’s bodyguard nearly escalates matters when Zhou’s dragon-like eyes appear and the bodyguard’s power fills the courtyard, but obeys Li’s command to stand down.
  • Their conversation shifts from confrontation to humor when Zhou interprets Li’s comment about the moon as suggestive. Li laughs, then speaks ominously of wanting to destroy something beautiful.
  • The chapter ends as Zhou sits confidently at the reserved table and someone familiar greets him with amused surprise.

Significant themes

  • Power and status: The crowd’s behavior toward Zhou marks his transition from an outsider whose place is questioned to a figure accepted among the leaders.
  • Trust, leverage, and hidden agendas: Li and Zhou cooperate, but both recognize that important information remains withheld; the seal serves as both payment and a sign of Li’s confidence.
  • Preparation amid uncertainty: Zhou knows victory is far from assured, while the artifact gives him tools to counter threats in the coming free-for-all.
  • Conspiracy and instability: Strange killings and the surprising defeat of Heaven-Law Abbey hint that larger forces may be shaping the competition.

Ch. 922The opening

Chapter summary

Key plot points and events

  • The Eight-Treasure Arhat, recently released from confinement, visits Zhou You and teases him about arriving at the Tianyuan Conference with only a small group. Zhou explains that Senior Brother Li and others went to Heavenly Mechanism Valley, which has skipped the conference.
  • The Arhat deliberately insults the Bone Profound Sect’s late Young Master You, whom Zhou killed. Their disciples rise in anger, but the abbot Kongming reins in the confrontation and calls the Arhat back. Zhou realizes the Eastward Temple may also have a grudge against the Bone Profound Sect.
  • The gathering remains tense but avoids physical fighting until Li Zhengfa, known as Qing Xuan, arrives as the Immortal Palace’s representative. Though an ordinary man without magic power, he commands immediate respect because of his position in the Green Palace and his service to the immortal.
  • Li announces the second round: contestants will enter a reality-illusion realm separated from the world by the immortal. Its sinister traces can erode their minds, and outside food—and even cultivators’ usual freedom from hunger and thirst—will be useless. Participants must find food inside, where supplies are limited.
  • A late rule allows each contestant to bring three attendants. After protests, Li explains that the immortal ordered it and gives them fifteen minutes to recruit from the spectators. Many contestants rush to gather allies.
  • Zhou, Chen Luo, and Lin Yunshao do not recruit anyone. Zhou says he has few friends and many enemies; Chen is forbidden by his mountain lord from seeking help. Lin, in Shengyuan’s personality, pretends to sleep. Zhou rejects bringing Senior Brother Wang, whom he considers a liability.
  • Once the time expires, Li begins the round: participants’ lives and deaths inside the realm will be left to fate, and the thirty-six groups that ultimately emerge will become the next Thirty-Six Sects.

Character developments and interactions

  • Zhou You remains wry and clear-eyed. He recognizes that the Arhat’s provocation is deliberate, reads the Eastward Temple’s hostility toward the Bone Profound Sect, and accepts that his group has no extra support.
  • Eight-Treasure Arhat (Huiwu) shows his familiar blunt humor and a willingness to needle the Bone Profound Sect, while Kongming publicly disciplines him without escalating the conflict.
  • Chen Luo shares an easy, teasing rapport with Zhou, but reveals that he is constrained by orders to fight alone.
  • Lin Yunshao/Shengyuan shifts into Shengyuan’s personality, who avoids the recruitment discussion by feigning sleep.
  • Li Zhengfa/Qing Xuan is calm and courteous, yet his authority—and the group’s fear of offending the immortal—makes the new rules unquestionable.

Significant themes

  • Power and hierarchy: The sects’ resentment and rivalries give way instantly when the immortal’s will is invoked.
  • Competition and survival: The realm’s mental danger, enforced hunger, scarce supplies, and uncertain alliances turn the next round into a test of endurance as well as combat.
  • Isolation and trust: The option to bring attendants highlights who has networks and allies; Zhou’s group enters without additional help.
  • Rivalry beneath restraint: Sect grudges remain active even when participants avoid open violence, and the Arhat’s deliberate taunting exposes those tensions.

Ch. 923Entry

Zhou You entered Wonderland and discovered that its food and even his own body behaved strangely, while his companions were scattered across different locations. The chapter left him facing a wild fruit that spoke after he rejected it.

  • The attendants revealed that touching the enormous gate transported contestants into Wonderland, and Zhou You gave Shengyuan and Chen Luo tracking talismans before entering.
  • A stranger bumped into Zhou You and slipped him a pouch, which Zhou You later found contained Hunger-Suppressing Pills and a jade pendant.
  • Zhou You arrived alone in a forest and found that Shengyuan's talisman pointed toward him while Chen Luo's gave no signal.
  • Zhou You discovered that food brought from outside rotted immediately and that his body felt ordinary hunger, despite his usual abilities.
  • Zhou You tried to eat a wild fruit, sensed that it was being digested as something wailing, and threw it away; the fruit asked why he would not eat it.

Ch. 924Uncanny

Zhou You entered the Demon-Suppressing Gate and encountered a completely corrupted world, where the Six Desires Remnant protected him from its maddening contradictions. Outside, Li Zhengfa and Ming Xuan traded barbs while their allies concealed their true intentions, and Ming Xuan warned that the Immortal might treat the world as a play.

  • Zhou You found that the forest’s ordinary appearance contradicted his perception of its living, monstrous nature, and the dissonance nearly drove him mad.
  • The Six Desires Remnant wrapped around Zhou You’s neck, dispelled the dissonance, and explained that everything in the place had been corrupted into something alien.
  • Zhou You crushed the talking fruit and hurried onward to find Shengyuan and Chen Luo.
  • Outside the gate, Li Zhengfa mocked Ming Xuan over rumors about his former master, and Ming Xuan retaliated by insulting Li Zhengfa’s origins and body.
  • After the crowd dispersed, Ming Xuan told two confidants that Li Zhengfa was trying to break down the boundary between the Immortal Palace and the Thirty-Six Sects.
  • Ming Xuan said the Immortal treated the world as a play and might not care whether the Immortal Palace survived.
